My deepest sympathies to Darrell's friends and family. We were high school classmates and I remember Darrell fondly. He was a genuinely nice guy. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers as you go through this difficult time.

Darrell was a great guy. He was one of the first to eat lunch with me, (and take me out for beers),when we moved to town. Such a nice guy, always cheerful! To the family, I am sorry for your loss.

My thoughts and prayers are with Darrell and his family at this difficult time. As a classmate we crosssed paths for years, and what I remember the most is his gentle contagious smile and he always had the right answer, he was one outstanding student!

Darrell and I lived together in Iowa City in the 80s while we were going to college. He was a great roommate. His laugh would make me laugh. He always had a great story to tell. He had an upright deep freeze and he kept pork in it that he got from his folks and occasionally he would grill us some pork burgers. The grilled pork burgers were excellent. He also made this great lasagna and we would invite girls over for dinner to have lasagna with us. Darrell was easy going and easy to live with. He had eclectic taste in music and could talk about and listen to almost any kind of music. Darrell was great on a road trip. We had a very interesting trip to Texas years ago that involved a visit to the justice-of-peace. I wonder if Darrell and that good ole boy are talking together in heaven. Darrell was a great friend and great fun. Darrell introduced me to the music of Junior Brown and I think of Darrell whenever I listen to Junior's songs.

Darrell shrieked with joy when he heard a Michael Jackson song, sang along with Boy George on the car radio, played air guitar to Joan Jett...he somehow got me to accompany him to a Juice Newton concert?! He happily accompanied me to see Lover Boy and I think there was a Rick Springfield concert somewhere in our collective past. Darrell was one of those people you really need when you're in High School. He was quick to smile and had an infectious laugh that he imposed on you at all the right and wrong times. He was ready, able and more than willing to participate in the next stupid thing that you might conjure. He was, in one word, a friend.
He once sent me a post card that read, "I'm here, wish you were great". I've held onto it for all these years. It made me smile 30 years ago. I smiled again tonight when I found the card. Still making people smile, what an amazing gift to a goofy teenager, and an adult. Thank you Darrell.

My senior year in high school Darrell and I were the two tenors in the choir and we went to participate in a concert with other choirs in Dubuque. During rehearsal of one section the tenors were singing alone and Darrell hit this bum note but being the cool customer he was he looked at me as if I was the culprit and I turned red like I was guilty. Stupid embarrassment gene. We would laugh about it whenever one of us brought it up. He was a character and I will miss him.
