I’ll remember the Iowa farm days of collecting lightning bugs in jars; I’ll remember the summer I spent there with my brothers, working on the farm every day— best work under the sun I’ve ever had; ill remember the family reunions brought to the farm, pure joy; I’ll remember the walks at the river house and the ball game; I’ll remember him building fishing poles; I’ll remember the stare and the cackle; I’ll remember his wisdom and his love.

I would like to send my deepest condolences to Steve, Greg and Angie for their loss.
Your father was indeed a great man, and I have many fond memories of him.
I'll never forget him checking me out of school to go weekend fishing when I was 12. I can't remember exactly where we went on that trip as there were others.
I know how you guys feel ,believe me I do, having lost my dad in Panama 51 years ago.
I'm glad I got to see Capt. Lahr a few years ago and am very happy I was able to have my with wife with me so that she could finally meet him, as I spoke of him to her many times over the years.
All too often we get busy and put things off in life , and regret it later, so I'm thankful I was able to see him.
So again, I thank (Capt) Lahr for his time and the things he did for me . I only addressed him as Captain Lahr because thats all I ever knew him as, I will miss him dearly.

I did not have the privilege to meet Mr. Lahr. However, I have been blessed to become friends of his two sons and meet their wonderful families. Greg and Steve are two of the finest men I have ever met. They exemplify all the traits in a man that I hope my sons grow up to possess. Honesty, integrity, hardworking, smart, patriotic, caring, lovers of life, doers and wonderful family men...these are just some of such traits. I've often thought, their dad sure must have known how to raise them! His life story as depicted in his obituary and the comments of others sure confirm my feeling that he must have been an incredible man. I hope to meet Angela someday, I bet she tops the boys! In fact, both "boys" have spoken so highly of their sister as she's cared for Mr. Lahr these past years.
Let's all remember the legacy he has left us. It is a high goal to uphold and achieve but the Lahr blood is strong and his example is worthy of our regard.
I pray for all of the family. May the Lord protect and guide all of you during this time in your years ahead.

To Steve, Greg and Angie - Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families this week as you mourn the loss of your Father. No matter the circumstances the finality of losing your Father is a very difficult time. Wayne was a very special man and his strong legacy lives in each one of you in its own unique way. Celebrate his life with the same gusto that he lived his! As your entire family gathers this next week, perhaps you could sing that David Allen Coe song just a little louder so "Papa Wayne" can hear ya.
Sending our condolences, our love and our respect to the entire family!

I remember spending a week for several summers with the Lahr family. Wayne and his brothers gave me an education I will never forget. They were always joking around and giving their step father good humored grief. I especially remember when my aunt made Wayne take me with him on a date. He kept telling me to keep my eyes shut.
He is truly an American hero and should be honored. I am honored to have know him and am better for it.

Some of my fondest memories growing up were fishing with my Papa. I remember first learning how to cast a rod in his gravel drive-way by flipping a plastic jig into a 5 gallon bucket. We had our best luck a few miles from the farm, at the Worthington Sportsman’s Pond, where we took this photo.
Whether it be serving his country or helping me clear out a “rats-nest” on my reel, my Papa dedicated his whole life to serving and protecting others. If I become anything like my grandfather in my years to come, it’ll be a life well lived. I love you papa!
