From 1968 to about 1973 I worked at the Little Cloud Girl Scout Camp near Bankston. I was about age 16 when I started. I worked with Tom O'Dowd. We were a couple of high school/college guys that liked working outdoors and learning new things. Working at an all girls camp was pretty nice too. During those years we worked on a regular basis with Albert Deutmeyer, Leon's uncle. Sometimes Albert's sons John and Jerry would come and help on big projects. Other times Eddie and Leon would come. I think Frank helped a few times too. Tom and I had great fun with Leon. The three of us would kid each other and tease each other. Leon was a joy to work with. He gladly did whatever task was asked of him. He got moody sometimes but for the most part he always had a big smile on his face. He worked with us doing all the things we did. He especially liked operating the riding lawnmower. I was truly sad when I read of his passing. Working with Leon at such a young age helped me understand that all people are good even if they are a little different from me. I have thought about Leon many times over the years. He mostly came to mind when I found myself with an unpleasant task to do. I would think of how Leon would smile and get to going on whatever was asked of him. I know I am not the only person he touched in his life but I want you to know he truly made a difference in mine. For that matter, so did Albert. Albert is in the top 10 of all men that positively influenced my life. I owe a lot to all the Deutmeyers. I hope my words provide some comfort to you as you mourn the loss of Leon. I am truly sorry for your loss.

We enjoyed visiting with Leon as he walked to and from work at Deutmeyer Service Station. He beamed with pride when he pointed out his new uniform with his name on the front. Our kids enjoyed a couple games of driveway basketball with him, also. Our sympathies to the Deutmeyer/Tegeler families.
