Steven J. Engelken, 54, of Oak Park Place in Dubuque and formerly of Dyersville, died Wednesday, September 23, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque. Visitation will be held from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. Sunday, September 27, 2015, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Ave SW in Dyersville where an American Legion/VFW Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue Monday, September 28th from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. at Kramer Funeral Home, prior to funeral services. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 28, 2015, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Dennis Quint will officiate. American Legion Post 137 and V.F.W. Post 7736 will accord Military Honors. Steve was born August 9, 1961, in Dubuque, the son of Dan and Therese (Henkels) Engelken. He was a 1980 graduate of Western Dubuque H.S. He earned an Associates Degree in Plumbing and Heating from NITI in Calmar. Steve served in the U.S. Army from 1983 – 1991, including a deployment in Desert Storm as a Water Treatment Specialist. Steve was the custodian at West Delaware Schools for 17 years. Steve was an avid fan of the Western Dubuque wrestling program, having been a two time state qualifier himself. He has been a resident of Oak Park Place for the last five years where he enjoyed his pen pals from Seton School, and playing cards and games with other residents. Survivors include his parents, Dan and Therese Engelken of Dyersville, siblings: Rick (Willeen) Engelken of Dubuque, Kay (Al) Heiberger of Farley, Dr. Jack (Michele) Engelken of Asbury; 5 nieces and nephews: Tyler and Jordyn Engelken, Abbie (Steve) Winter, and Matt and Katherine Engelken; 2 great nieces, Grace and Cecelia Winter; numerous aunts and uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Rudy and Lidwina Henkels and John & Margaret Engelken. We would like to thank the ICU s staff at Mercy Medical Center and the staff at Oak Park Place for all of the wonderful care given to Steve.
