To Steve's family... i was so sorry to see that Steve had passed away. I just wanted to share with you how much my mother, Pat Hefel-Schute enjoyed his visits and the treats he always had for her!(candy bars!) She lived at Oak Park for just a short while in 2014 and Steve came to her funeral services in Sept of that year.Steve was a fine man and obviously a fine soldier also! I wish i'd have seen his obituary yesterday...i'd have absolutely been at his services to honor him. My heart goes out to you all!

I don't even know where to begin....Steve was an amazing addition to Oak Park Place, and to the everyday lives of staff and residents who worked and lived there. Steve was quick witted, funny, and yet, just as quick to recognize when someone was sad, or having a rough day! Steve didn't need to be asked to pour coffee to the folks in the dining room, he just did it; often taking his time to visit with each and everyone; you could hear the people talking and thanking Steve for his kindness and thoughtful gesture. When the girls would get "behind", the residents would say:" Where's Steve??We could always count on Steve!! He was the first person to welcome a new resident, helping them get "comfortable" with moving into a new environment, he was an extra in a card game if they were short, ,he was a very giving, gentle man!! Oh yes, Steve could be bull-headed, but that was his way of showing his frustration, his limitations, he really tried to be "better", but could see it wasn't really turning out that way. I know I did everything I could to encourage Steve not to give up. I will miss the big guy, but I have my memories that I will hang onto!! Please find comfort in knowing he brought joy and happiness to a lot of people, and loved his family a lot!!

The Lord has quite the man, in Steve Engelken, in His heavenly home today. Steve's love for his family was always apparent and his attitude toward life should be an example for everyone. God must surely love him.
