Obituary of Anton Albert Kortenkamp

Tony was born June 18, 1910, Rib Lake, Wisconsin, to the late Simon and Catherine (Stoeckl) Kortenkamp. He grew up on, and later farmed, the Kortenkamp family farm, Aurora. On November 4, 1936, he married the love of his life, Ruth Tegeler, in St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville. The Basilica was built in 1889 by Tony's great-uncle, Father Anton Kortenkamp. They farmed until moving to Independence. During WWII they lived in St. Paul, Minnesota, where Tony worked on B-24 bombers at Holman Field. After the war, they moved to Oelwein, where he was a mechanic. He was with King Brothers Oelwein Implement for twelve years, working on Packards and International Harvester trucks. He later became a custodian at Mercy Hospital, Oelwein. They retired to Cedar Falls. For the past six years Tony lived at Village Ridge Apartments, Marion. He was preceded in death by brothers: Leonard, Raymond, and Richard, and sister Henrietta Cashen; his wife of 64 years, Ruth (Tegeler) Kortenkamp; two grandchildren; and one great grandchild. He is survived by three sons, Daniel (Janet), Stevens Point, Wisconsin; Leon (Virginia), Belmont, California; Edwin, Marion, Iowa; one daughter, Marilyn (James) Van Pelt, Grand Junction, Iowa; eighteen grandchildren; and thirty-one great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 4 - 7 p.m. at Kramer Funeral Home, 103 5th St., Dyersville; with rosary at 4:30 p.m. Funeral mass will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 29, 2010 at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with burial in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Dennis Quint.
