Obituary of Gene LeRoy Cook

Gene Cook, 87, of Scotch Grove, Iowa died Friday, July 12, 2013 at his residence where he had lived his entire life.
Friends may call from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church in Monticello where a funeral service will commence at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment will be at a later date in Wayne Zion Cemetery. Rev. Ellery Dykeman will officiate. Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello is assisting the family.
Gene was born on May 4, 1926, in Scotch Grove, Iowa the son of Howard and Alta (Glenn) Cook. He graduated from Anamosa High School with the Class of 1944. On November 28, 1948 he married Betty Michel at the First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. Together they farmed near Scotch Grove until retiring in 1991. The day after retiring from farming he began working at the Jones County Landfill near their home. His last day at work was last Monday, July 8.
Gene was an avid fan of the Hawkeyes, Cubs, Bears and NASCAR. His last night he watched the Cubs shutout the Cardinals! He loved to play cards and go to the casinos. His passion and interests were always in farming.
He is survived by his children: Linda (Ted) Willliams of Mt. Vernon, Mike (Marita) Cook of Thompson, Carolyn (Bill) Lutz of Ames, Julie (Dennis) Weers of Anamosa, and Rick (Susan) Cook of Monticello; 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren with another on the way; and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 2008, 3 brothers: Merlin, Galen and Leo Cook.
We, Gene's family, would like to thank the staff of Jones Regional Medical Center Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab Department, especially Kim and Theresa, for their years of special attention and care. We would also like to thank the Wayne Zion Community for always remembering Dad.
