Andy was such a gem of a person - one of a kind. Our family is incredibly blessed to have known him. I will never forget how instrumental he was in personally bringing Kay to the Coast of Maine (Boothbay Harbor) so we could meet in person that wonderful and unforgettable June day back in 1988! It's a treasured memory I will never forget and for which I am forever grateful:) Before he ascended to the heavens above, he certainly knew how much he was loved by his family and friends. He is now resting in peace. Our deepest condolences - with love from the Harmon/Withee families.

It was great to see two people who really loved each other. Andy had a twinkle in his eye when he was with Bethany. He is now watching over her in heaven with a twinkle in his eye. My sympathies to all of his family and friends.

The little boy sitting by the Christmas tree or lounging in a chair with his beloved dog, Honey, on his lap saying, "hi da" since he was three. Maybe the curious boy that took things apart just to find out what there is to see but always needed help piecing things back together again without any extra parts. Perhaps the loving son hiding in the coat closet, for an hour, waiting for you to come home and put your coat away just to say, "Hi Dad." Of course your reaction was all the reward I needed or as they say, "Priceless." I'm grateful for the many pets I was allowed to have like dogs, cats, gerbils, guppies, fish, mice, crawfish, salamanders and many more I'm sure I have forgotten. The sturdy hand on the back of my seat, teaching me to ride a bike, you let go to set me free. That first drive on the highway was a bit unnerving, me behind the wheel, steering straight and staying out of the ditch was a bit of a challenge but with your hand at the ready and you by my side I knew I was safe for you were along for the ride.
The love of nature you passed on to us, from canoeing, camping, fishing, birding, biking and hiking, there was plenty to see. Our first night camping as a family we survived a tornado, mom, Kay and I in the car watching Aunt Mary and you struggling against the wind to hold up the tent, to which we figured if that's the worse it can get a camping family we will become. Family vacations across the country pulling Puff the Huff wagon behind us. Kay and I in the back seat behaving like the little "angels" we were. Asking just a couple times, "Are we there yet." What fun sights we set out to see.
I cherish the father son adventures we set out on, like ice fishing on Bussey Lake or Swift Slough on the mighty Mississippi. Speeding down the winding gravel roads, on a trout fishing outing, kicking up rocks with each power slide in the old Montego. To this day I'm still not sure if it was the thrill of the ride or the fabulous fishing. How about paddling up the Kickapoo, at flood stage for some refreshing brew or canoeing down the Wisconsin having to take cover under a Rail Road bridge during an ugly storm of which we learned later was actually a tornado. The shared enjoyment of rides on Grandpa's tractor or in his old truck. The old truck we later restored into Dutch39. Motorcycle rides on the back of your bike. No words exchanged just enjoying the moment with Pops. Then later, the motorcycle bug bit me. I then understood the feeling of freedom and relaxation gained on a bike for a quick escape from everyday life. Like many things I'm grateful you shared that with me. Just some of the cherished memories of the many adventures this life has come to be.
With your uncanny timely encouragement you sensed the need, like a small note on my desk lamp one late night for only me to see, stating, "You have to put the happy back into Happy Joe's." It was just what I needed after a couple frustrating weeks with the new job and the challenges that layed before me. You had no high expectations or goals you tried to live out through me. No judgments or lack of support as long as I am happy is all that you dreamed for me. Fearless I will be of the journey ahead with the courage you have instilled in me. I could always move forward knowing that my beloved pops will always be standing by my side. The pride in your eyes I could read, I can only hope you saw the same with-in mine staring back at you.
I hear many say how much alike we are and that I remind them of you. That people see you in me, my fathers' son I'm proud to be. I realize that envy and jealousy will be a future struggle, knowing that the one man in which I could view what they see will no longer be there standing before me. Andrew John/John Andrew our names and characteristics are one in the same mimicking each other as if before a mirror. As long as there is a reflection for me to see my beloved pops staring back at me with-in my heart you will always be. Your legacy will live on through the lives you have touched long after our time here on earth has past. With how you treat others with respect, always ready with a smile, lifting people's spirits and quick with words of encouragement for them to pursue their dreams. I have come to appreciate the life we lead as you have exemplified it's your actions not words and the simple things in life that matter the most. With this journey called life I will precede, you are the one I strive to be, with my head held high for you will always be with-in me.
The past two months what a sight we must have been with our adventures in the hospital, pushing your wheel chair up and down the halls seeing what mischief we could get in. Sitting in waiting rooms you would rest your head on my shoulder it was then I realized that our rolls had reversed now that you are getting older. All the bear hugs we had standing you up from your bed on the count of three then I'd whisper, "I've gotcha pops, I've gotcha, you can lean on me." The father son transition in life has come to be. Through the eyes of a proud son becoming the pride in my father's eyes. Like handing the correct tools to an outstretched hand, first yours then in time mine, the student becomes the teacher. Or me holding the board, you with the saw, to working on projects side by side, then you holding the board and me with the saw. Eventually you sitting back and supervising, with a smile from me, thinking to myself, "Relax pops, I've got this, you taught me well." Though your earthly journey has come to an end you will live on within. It is way too early for you to be taken from us but God has a plan so with faith in him we trust. While holding your hand during your last breath and watching the diminished pulse of your neck, like that hand on that bicycle seat, I let go to set you free, don't worry pops I've got this you can count on me. With a kiss on your forehead and the closing of your eyes I said my goodbyes. Whether in body or soul you were always there for me so rest in peace pops I've got this you can lean on me.
With Much Love Pops,
John Andrew Huff
