PETERSBURG, IOWA
Floyd B. Goedken, 81 of Petersburg, Iowa, died Sunday, March 24, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque, Iowa.
Friends called from 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville where a parish vigil service was held at 4:00 p.m., the Knights of Columbus recited a rosary at 6:30 p.m. and American Legion Post 137 gathered at 7:00 p.m.
Services were held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Petersburg, Iowa with burial in the church cemetery. Military rites were accorded by the American Legion Post 137. Rev. John O'Connor officiated.
Floyd was born October 30, 1931 at the family farm in rural Petersburg, Iowa, the son of Alfred and Loretta (Koch) Goedken. He was a Korean War veteran. He married Doris E. Vaske on September 18, 1956 in New Vienna, Iowa. Together they were proud to work and raise their family on a century farm north of Petersburg. Faith and family were always very important aspects in his life.
Floyd was a 3rd and 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1734, American Legion Post 137, SS. Peter & Paul Parish Council and served as a trustee for the Colony Township for many years. He enjoyed farming, playing cards (500, Solo, and UNO with the grandkids) and was a Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye fan.
Survivors include his wife, Doris; 5 sons: Wayne (Rachel) of Harlan, Loras (Tammy) of Swisher, Al (Carol) of Madison, WI, Patrick (Jacinda) of Mason City, Phil Goedken of Petersburg; 12 grandchildren: Ben, Sarah, Nick, Alex, Chelsy, Lindsay, Molly, Jeremy, Amanda, Danielle, Marco and Isabelle; siblings: Joan (Urban) Pasker of New Vienna, Dale Goedken of Petersburg, Lois (Donald) Burkle and Delaine (Paul) Knipper both of Dyersville, Deacon Martin (Lisa) Goedken of Conception Junction, MO, Delores (Terry) O'Brien of Cascade, Sr. Rita Goedken of Morton, MS, Dennis (Ann) Goedken of Cottage Grove, WI, and Charles (Patrice) Goedken of Harrisburg, PA;
in-laws: Virgene Bockenstedt and Ralph (Mary) Vaske both of Dyersville, Marvin (Pat) Vaske of Garnavillo and Charles (Donna) Vaske of New Vienna.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Joseph Goedken; siblings: Sr. Angela Goedken and David Goedken in infancy; a brother-in-law Martin Bockenstedt; and a nephew Tim Burkle.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
