Irene K. Recker 95, of Iowa City, and formerly of Monticello, died Wednesday, August 1, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in Iowa City. Irene was born on March 28, 1917 in Worthington, Iowa the daughter of William and Ida (Kremer) Knepper. Irene earned her teaching certificate and taught in a one-room school house until she married Ernest J. Recker on January 16, 1945, in Worthington, Iowa. Most of their married life they made their home in Monticello. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Royal Neighbors and Our Lady of Fatima Study Group. She enjoyed playing cards, doing crossword puzzles, playing scrabble, and arranging flowers. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Survivors include her 4 children: Neil (Becky) of Prairie Village, Kansas, Mark (Linda) of Pella, IA, Michele, and Mike (Barb) of Iowa City, IA; 12 grandchildren: Anne Recker, Henry Recker, Isabel Recker, Eric (Amy) Recker, Bryan (Betsy) Recker, Hillary Recker, Lindsay Zach, Heather(Dru) Tran, Michael Zach, Cami Recker, Megan Recker and Caleb (Betsy) Recker, 5great grandchildren: Blake and Jace Recker, Kate and Jill Recker and Anderson Tran; siblings: George (Alma) Knepper of Cascade, Mike (Jean) Knepper of Dyersville, Helen Carroll of Ryan, Joan (John) Anstoetter of Dubuque and Ida (John) Trumm of Cascade, two sisters-in-law, Gladys Knepper and Pearl Recker, both of Dyersville. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ernie in 2007, siblings: Loras (Mary) Knepper, Carl (Marie) Knepper, Walter (Mary) Knepper, Paul Knepper and Rosalyn (Edmond) Ludwig, in-laws: Raymond, Florian, Irvin, Gerald and Gilbert Recker, Marie (Joe) Moorman and Frank Carroll. Memorials are preferred to Sacred Hearth Catholic Church and Camp Courageous of Iowa. Friends may call from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 4, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Monticello where a Mass of Christian Burial will commence at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Keith Birch with Rev. Dan Knepper will concelebrate.
