Surviving are his wife, Norma, of Worthington; one daughter , Julie (Steve) Bries, of Worthington; one son, Jerry Fortmann, of Anamosa; six grandchildren, Melissa and Anthony Fortmann, of Manchester; and Patrick, Daniel, Jessica and Kristi Bries, of Worthington; one brother, Sylvester (Marcella) Fortmann, of Worthington; one sister-in-law, Eileen Fortmann, of Ryan, and in-laws: Monroe (Ardella) Hoffmann, of Worthington; Bernice (Melvin) Mai, of Dubuque; Mabel Kremer, of Coggon; and George (Rose) Mullis, of Central City. Merlin was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters Court #607 and the St. Paul Parish Altar and Rosary Society. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. He was the past Chief Ranger for the local court and a past officer for the Dubuqueland District Catholic Order of Foresters. He received his Legion of Honor award on April 15, 1976. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He served his church as a past member of several parish boards, an usher and in many other ways. Dad lived his life to help others
