Survivors include his wife, Geraldine, a daughter, Beverly (Vince) Folkedahl of Iowa City, IA, 2 grandchildren: David (Kari) Folkedahl of Iowa City, IA and Elizabeth (Daniel) Guza of Arlington Heights, IL, 3 great grandchildren, Vincent and Gabriel Folkedahl and David Guza, 2 step-great grandchildren: Alexa and Luke Pietan of Iowa City, 3 sisters: Sr. Mary E. Engler, OSF and Mary Jane Beitzel, both of Dubuque and Ann Green of Carroll, IA, one sister-in-law, Jeanette Engler of New Hope, MN and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John Engler. Dave was born on March 22, 1927 in Worthington, Iowa, the son of Edgar and Grace (Kramer) Engler. He married Geraldine Hess on January 27, 1948 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Worthington, IA. Dave served in the Navy during WWII. He was employed by the Dubuque Packing Company as a livestock buyer and was a member of St. Francis Xavier Basilica, the Catholic Order of Foresters, and American Legion Post # 137 of Dyersville. He served from 1948 to 1975 as a volunteer fireman in Worthington. Dave loved outdoor sports, especially fishing and hunting. He was instrumental in helping to develop the area that is now the Worthington Sportsman Club. He loved to fish for walleyes and was known to his fishing friends as "Blackie." He was a member of the Dubuqueland Chapter of Pheasants Forever and was honored in 1995 and 2002 for outstanding support in preservation of wildlife habitat. Dave played baseball in high school, the Navy and for semi-pro teams in Worthington, Cascade and Dubuque. He was also an avid New York Yankee fan. The joys of his life were his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Memorials are preferred to Hospice of Dubuque or Xavier Grade School.
