Sylvester A. Fortman, 78, of Worthington, Iowa died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at the Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque. Friends may call from 2 to 9 pm Tuesday, August 3, 2004, at the Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville where a parish scripture service will be held at 5:00 p.m. The Worthington Fire Department will gather at 6:00 p.m., and American Legion and V.F.W. services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m Wednesday, August 4, 2004, at the St. Paul Catholic Church in Worthington with Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Sylvester was born on December 29, 1925, in Worthington the son of Ralph and Anna (Gaul) Fortmann. He served his country during Korean War and received the Purple Heart. He married Marcella C. Elenz on July 9, 1953 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Dyersville. They farmed in the Worthington area until his retirement when he began to enjoy wood crafting for family and friends. He was a member of the American Legion Post 137, V.F.W. Post 7736 and the Disabled Veterans chapter 6., the Catholic Order of Foresters Court 607. He is survived by his wife Marcella of Worthington and his children: Janice (Lenny) Racine of Spring Valley, IL,. Dave Fortman of Worthington, Joyce (Delwyn) Curtis and Judy (Gerald) Nachtman, both of Manchester; 10 grandchildren: Lenny, Kristin and Jason Racine, William, Rachel and Melissa Curtis, and Robert, Laura, Mindy and Sarah Nachtman.
