She is survived by two sons: LaVerne (Ruth) Schafer and Dale (Jeane) Schafer both of Anamosa; two daughters: Diane Sparks of Dubuque and Tampa (D.J) Fobert of Malibu, CA; 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1974, four brothers and two sisters. Josephine was born on November 13, 1920, in Urbana, Iowa the youngest of 7 children born to Byron A. & Susan (Welbers) Bruce. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Stone City, IA. She attended Viola School. She was united in marriage to Ernest Schafer on June 19, 1939. They farmed until 1950 when they moved to Monticello, Iowa. She worked at Hoag Duster. She later worked at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids until her retirement in 1982. Memorials are preferred to Camp Courageous of Iowa.
