Obituary of Clotilda McQuillen

Survivors include four sons: Loras "Lefty" (Kathy) of Holy Cross, IA, Robert (Linda) and Alan (Rose) both of Peosta, IA, Lyle (Ann) of Dubuque, IA; two daughters: Diane (Kenny) Hannan of Rickardsville, IA, Ruth (Chuck) Gassmann of Ankeny, IA; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Vince Maiers of Holy Cross, IA; two sisters-in-law, LaVerne Maiers of Kansas City, MO and Melinda Maiers of Garnavillo, IA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, on July 2, 1967; a daughter, Mary Ann, who was stillborn; three brothers, Reynold, Edmund and Leonard Maiers; and one sister, Lucille Zewen. Clotilda was born on January 21, 1918 in Luxemburg, Iowa, the daughter of Nicholas V. and Ann (Clemen) Maiers. She married Ralph P. McQuillen on February 23, 1943 in Luxemburg, Iowa. Together they farmed in the Holy Cross area. She lost her husband 37 years ago, but remained active in farming until 1978 when she moved to town. She raised her family with quiet strength. She had a huge garden, was a great cook and loved to bake. She was a great sports fan, and also a good friend, always driving others to enjoy a great time playing bingo and euchre. She also cleaned at the Holy Cross school. She was a member of the Holy Cross Rosary Society. A Clotilda McQuillen memorial fund has been established and memorials are preferred.
