Arthur A. Ries, 94, of New Vienna, Iowa died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, November 15, 2011. Friends may call from 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 18, 2011, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville where a parish scripture service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friends may continue to call after 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in New Vienna. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 19, 2011, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, New Vienna, Iowa with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Carl Ries will officiate with Rev. John O'Connor concelebrating. Arthur was born June 9, 1917, the son of John and Barb (Elenz) Ries. He married Louise A. Goebel on October 14, 1940, in Luxemburg, Iowa. Together they farmed and raised their family Northeast of New Vienna until moving to town in 1990. Art enjoyed farming, visiting with family and friends, telling stories, and playing cards. Arthur was a faithful and devoted Catholic, and a lifelong member of St. Boniface Parish. Survivors include his wife, Louise, 11 children: Fr. Carl Ries of Charles City, Judy Ries of Omaha, NE, Nancy Ries of Downers Grove, IL, Larry Ries of Dubuque, Susan (Steve) Shirk of Wilton, IA, Doris (Al) Wessels of Dyersville, Dale (Karen) Ries of New Vienna, Barbara (Stan) Radio of Omaha, NE, Donna (Dan) Drexler of Bettendorf, Sandra (Mike) Ries-Wandrey of Ankeny, and Connie (Dennis) Deutmeyer of Rye, NY; 27 grandchildren: Kristine, Matthew, Eric, Timothy, Lillian, Grace, Ben, Katie, Brian, Zachary, Jacob, Shalyn, Peter, Michele, Hannah, John, Luke, Abigail, Olivia, Eleanor, Anastasia, Joshua, Jordan, Jessica, James, William and Joseph, and 15 great grandchildren; 4 sisters: Loretta Brunsman of Dyersville, Bernice Gassmann and Alma Brunsman both of Manchester, Esther Steffen of Edgewood; a sister-in-law: Alvina Ries of Dyersville. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Alphonse Ries, Vince Ries, Clarence Ries, Dorothy Bierman and Herb Ries; several brothers-and-sisters-in-law. An Arthur Ries Memorial Fund has been established and memorials are preferred. Memorials may also be directed to the church/charity of the donor's choice.
