Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Holy Cross; two sons: Bob (Sherry) Hayes of Holy Cross, Tim (Ann) Hayes of Dubuque; 5 grandchildren: Brian, Marty, Mike, Sarah and Lisa Hayes; one brother, Clem Hayes of Dubuque; one sister, Viola (Olie) Avery of Dubuque; and one sister-in-law, Joan Hayes of St. Catherine. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother: Virgil Hayes; five sisters: Delia Duster, Genevieve Duster, Evalina Schultz, Frances Clemen and Clara Klaren. Louis was born on January 6, 1913, in Holy Cross, Iowa, the son of Edward and Catherine (Ellerbach) Hayes. Louis was educated in Holy Cross School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in November, 1942, as a radio operator. He married Ruth (Feltes) on May 30, 1949, at Sacred Heart Church, Dubuque, Iowa. Louis owned and operated the Holy Cross Locker until his retirement in 1983. He is a retired member of the Holy Cross Fire Dept., a past member of the City Council, the Holy Cross Athletic Club and was an active member of the Holy Name Society, Catholic Order of Foresters Holy Cross Court 881, Farley Knights of Columbus Council, and the Farley American Legion. He was also selected as the first Holy Cross Citizen of the Year in 1985.
