Obituary of Ruth Arens

Survivors include a brother, John D. (Marie) Brueckner of Dyersville, a brother-in-law, Arthur Arens and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Herb in 1985, a son John E. in 1989, 2 brothers: Charles and George Brueckner; 2 sisters: Elise Brueckner and Celeste Keayes. Ruth was born on July 23, 1911 in Dyersville, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Mary "Mayme" Agnes (Cunningham) Brueckner. She married H.J. "Herb" Arens on November 8, 1943 in Dyersville, Iowa. Ruth's first love was singing, especially in church. She joined the Basilica Choir in 1926 when Prof. Joe Mangerich was the organist and choir director. Ruth joined the Resurrection Choir when it was founded. In the 1940's she accompanied the Basilica Choir on the organ and the all male choir of twenty voices with Mr. Henry Mescher as choir director. She also played and sang for many weddings and special occasions. Ruth was a member of the Historical Society in Dyersville and sang for several years as soloist for the Municipal Band. She was also a member of the Hospital Auxiliary and volunteer since it was organized with over 2000 hours. Memorials preferred to St. Francis Xavier Basilica. Friends may call from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m. Sunday, April 16, 2006, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville where a parish scripture service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 17, 2006, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, in Dyersville, Iowa with burial in St. Francis Cemetery, Dyersville. Officiating will be Rev. Jerry Kopacek.
