Herbert is survived by his wife of 66 years, Alvina and eight children: Lou Ann Hutchinson of Georgetown, KY, Gerald (Betty) Ries, Harold (Dianna) Ries both of Earlville, Ethel Tholander of Norfolk, VA, Gladys (Dennis) Felton, Sharon (Bruce) Besler both of Dyersville, Karon (Joe) DeMar of North Liberty and Jane (Kevin) Linebaugh of Broken Arrow, OK. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, one brother, Arthur (Louise) Ries of New Vienna, four sisters, Loretta Brunsmann of Dyersville, Alma Brunsmann, Berniece (Frances) Gassman both of Manchester and Esther Steffen of Edgewood. Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Dorothy (Ray) Biermann, three brothers, Vincent (Mercedes) Ries, Clarence Ries and Alphonse (Gertrude) Ries, a son-in-law Eugene Rodney Hutchinson and one great grandchild Ian Joseph Felton and several nieces and nephews. Memorials are preferred. Herbert was born June 14, 1915 in New Vienna, Iowa, the son of the late John and Barbara (Elenz) Ries. He attended country school near New Vienna. He married Alvina Sabers on January 2, 1940 in New Vienna. Herbert was a member of the Oneida School Board, was a board member of the Greeley Creamery, was employed at the former Allyn Hardware Store in Greeley and farmed until his retirement in 1977. Herbert was a member of The Men's Holy Name Society at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Greeley, Ia. The Ries' lived on the family farm south of Greeley for 53 years until moving to Dyersville in 1997.
