Obituary of Joseph Cyril Meis

Survivors include his wife, Florence, a son Bill of Platteville, WI., 2 daughters: Donna (Lial) Prier of Ryan, Iowa and Karla of Deerfield, WI, 8 grandchildren: Nick Meis of Las Vegas, Nevada, Laurie Meis of Bernard, Iowa, Julie Meis of Eau Claire, WI., Brittani Meis of Platteville, WI., Melissa, Holly and Clinton Prier of Ryan, Iowa and Kevin Kieler of Deerfield, WI., 2 sisters: Leora Willenbring of Dyersville and Jeanette (Elmer) Hilkin of Dubuque, Iowa, and many brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a 9 month old sister, Helen. Joe was born on January 25, 1924 in New Vienna, Iowa, the son of William and Josephine (Hoefer) Meis. He married Florence A. Steffensmeier on February 5, 1948 in Dyersville, Iowa. Together they farmed in the Holy Cross area until retirement in 1984 when they moved to town. Joe's hobbies became gardening, both flowers around the house and vegetables (especially potatoes) behind the house. He enjoyed his pets, feeding the birds and visiting with people. He never missed a card party and he watched the Chicago Cubs regularly. Attending mass regularly was an important expression of his faith. Friends may call from 2 - 8 p.m. Sunday, January 14, 2007, at Kramer Funeral Home in Holy Cross where a parish scripture service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday January 15, 2007, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, in Holy Cross, Iowa with burial at St. Boniface Cemetery, New Vienna. Officiating will be Rev. Paul Baldwin.
