Frederick "Fred" D. Herman, 69, of Dubuque, Iowa and formerly of Maquoketa, died Tuesday, January 10, 2012, at his home. Friends may call from 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 12, 2012, at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello, Iowa. Friends may continue to call after 9:30 a.m. Friday. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 13, 2012, at Kramer Funeral Home, Monticello, Iowa, with burial in Oakland Cemetery, Manchester, Iowa. Fred was born on June 20, 1942, in Dubuque, Iowa the son of Lawrence J. and Louisa J. (Vierow) Herman. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1960. He worked for the Iowa State Highway Commission, John Deere, and Raphael Strub Construction. His proudest accomplishment was being an Iowa State Trooper for 33 years until his retirement in 2003. His career as a State Trooper and the relationships with fellow troopers meant the world to him. He married Lorraine Strub on January 16, 1965 in Dubuque, Iowa and had two children to this union. They later divorced. He married Kay Petsche Oberbroeckling on June 23, 2007, in Monticello, Iowa. Fred enjoyed time with Kay, traveling, and being with family and friends (at coffee). He especially liked classic car shows and Chevrolets. Survivors include his wife, Kay, his children: Colleen (Keith Simmons) Herman of Maquoketa and Doug (Leann) Herman of Monticello; 2 stepsons: Chris (Leah) Oberbroeckling of Marion and Chad Oberbroeckling of Lake Zurich, IL; 7 grandchildren: Sydney, Sawyer and Caleb Herman, and Ashtin, Michaela, Chris and Brycen Oberbroeckling; his parents-in-law: Lavern and Norma Petsche of Dyersville; brothers-and-sisters-in-law: Duane (Sharon) Petsche of DeWitt, Mary (Doug) Jones of Shueyville, and Karen (Carl) Bries of Luxemburg, many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorials are preferred and may be directed to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or to Hospice of Dubuque. The family would like to extend a warm thank you to Diane and Nicole with Hospice of Dubuque. Also, a special thank you to his coffee buddies, many friends and members of the Iowa State Patrol, who supported him and gave their friendship over many years.
