Obituary of Leverne Charles Platz

Mr. Platz was born February 9, 1925 in Dyersville, the son of Charles and Cecilia (Jasper) Platz. Vern married Jean Bruggemann on May 30, 1950 in St. Francis Catholic Church in Dyersville. She preceded him in death on Nov. 26, 2004. Vern worked as a market manager for the National Tea Co. for 33 years and for Super Value stores for 11 and a half years. Following his retirement he worked for the Kramer Funeral Home for a number of years. Vern was a member of Dyersville Legion Post 137 and The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 431. Survivors include brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Valeria Platz, Norma Deppe, Howard and Theresa Bruggemann and Lila and Frank Niday, all of Dyersville, numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, 2 brothers, Herbert and Gilbert, and 2 sisters, Anna Mae Breitbach and an infant sister. Vern served in the army from Sept. 1943 to Jan. 1946 serving in New Guinea and the Philippines as a machine gunner with the 210th Anti-Aircraft Battalion. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the South Pacific Ribbon with three bronze stars, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two bronze stars. He received his education in St. Francis Xavier grade and high school. Vern enjoyed traveling and playing cards. A Vern Platz memorial fund has been established.
