Obituary of Roland Harold Westhoff

Survivors include his wife, Catherine, 4 daughters: Anne (Ken) Recker of Ames, Iowa, Janice (Robert) Cowman of Austin, Tex., Mary Beth (Duane) Thole of Dyersville, Iowa and Susan (Craig) Recker of New Vienna, Iowa; 3 sons: Philip (Monica) of Dyersville, Iowa, Joseph (Barbara) of Frisco, Tex. and Thomas (Teresa) of Clive, Iowa; 2 sisters: Leona Koelker of Dubuque, Iowa, and Rosella Wegmann of Dyersville, Iowa; 3 sisters-in-law, Marie Westhoff and Isabel Westhoff, both of Dyersville and Mary Westhoff of Mancherster, Iowa; 23 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 5 sisters: Monica Steffensmeier, Marie Wilhelm, Josephine Westhoff, Delores Lahr Manternach and Frances Besler, and 7 brothers: Edmund, Lawrence, Aloysius, Hubert, William, Ambrose, and Leo. Roland was born March 9, 1924 in Petersburg, Iowa, the son of Herman and Elizabeth (Geistkemper) Westhoff. He served in the US Army from 1946 - 1947. Upon returning he married Catherine Anne Weber on February 9, 1948 in Colesburg, Iowa. Together they farmed north of Manchester for eight years and then moved near Dyersville and farmed until retirement in 1982. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1734, Edward W. Lake V.F.W. Post 7736, and American Legion Post 137. Rollie enjoyed baseball and softball through out his life and was a very dedicated Cubs fan! Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at the Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville where a parish scripture service will be held at 4 p.m., an American Legion/V.F.W service will be held at 7 p.m., and a Knights of Columbus Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville with burial in the church cemetery. Special thanks to the Oak Crest Manor staff, Heartland Hospice and the physicians and staff at Mercy Medical Center, Dyersville for their loving care.
