Obituary of Robert Joseph Greif

Robert J. Greif, 83, of rural Monticello, Iowa died Friday January 27, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, Iowa after a lengthy illness. Friends may visit from 2 until 8 p.m. on Monday, January 30, 2012 at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello, Iowa where a vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church, Monticello, Iowa with burial in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Castle Grove, Iowa. Officiating will be Rev. Keith Birch and Rev. Neil Manternach. . Survivors include, Alvina, his wife of 61 years, 1 daughter: Barbara (Keith) Kuhlengel of Palmyra, PA, 2 sons: Donald (Deann) of Chico, CA. Roger (Beth) of Cedar Rapids, IA. 5 grandchildren: Adrienne Kuhlengel of Lancaster, PA. Trevor Kuhlengel of Palmyra PA. Ryan (Lisa) Greif of Davis, CA. Marcus Greif of Reno, NV. Lainie Greif of Chico, CA. 2 step grandchildren: Jeremiah Burhite of Des Moines, IA., Joshua Burhite of Ames, IA. and 1 great grandchild Alexa Greif of Davis, CA. Robert is also survived by, 2 sisters: Teresa (Dick) Stevens of Cedar Rapids, IA. and Jeanette (Duane) Freese of Monticello, IA. 5 brothers: Joe (Jean) Greif of Coggon, IA. Earl (Velda) Greif of Coal Valley, IL. Fay (Lois) Greif of Coggon, IA. Arnold (Betty) Greif of Central City, IA. and Louis (Marcy) Greif of Cedar Rapids, IA. 2 sisters-in-law: Elodie Greif of Cedar Rapids, IA. and Rita Greif of Marion, IA. plus numerous nieces and nephews. Robert was born on June 8, 1928 in Hopkinton, Iowa, the son of Emil and Josephine Gudenkauf Greif. He married Alvina Manternach on June 14, 1950, in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Cascade, Iowa. Robert and Alvina farmed for 40 years in the Prairieburg, Lamont, and Castle Grove area. After retirement they spent time together traveling to several foreign countries. Robert loved to tinker in his shop and could repair almost anything. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, his son David in 2009 and 2 brothers: John and Loras Greif.
