Obituary of Dorothy Marie Sandlin

Those left to honor her memory include four children: Cheryl (Brock) Reade of Battle Lake, MN, Tana (Gary) Barsness of Bettendorf, Dr. Kevin (Gayle) Stingley of Monticello, and Tom Stingley of Center Junction; grandchildren Ami (Tim) Lindgren and Cameron (Terri) Reade all of Fort Collins, CO, Jeff (Val) Barsness of Eldridge, IA, Cory Barsness of Marble Falls, TX, Jessica (Justin) Schneiter of Coralville, IA, Jenna Stingley, Shelby Stingley, Preston Stingley and Scot Stingley, all of Monticello; great grandchildren include Tyler Lindgren, Reade Lindgren, Ayden Reade and Brock Clayton Reade, all of Fort Collins; stepchildren: Dave Sandlin and Sue (John) Schwenner and their families, all of Grafton, WI; a brother Dr. Charles. Lester (Beverly) Salmon of Bremerton WA; sisters: Alice White of Virginia Beach, VA, Erlene (William) Morris of Wilmington, NC and Jane Snoddy of Richmond, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husbands she was preceded in death by her parents and sisters: Ethel Hooper and Margaret Collins. Dorothy was born December 30, 1926 in Flint Hill, VA to Rev. Charles Lester and Hazel Mae (Cook) Salmon. She was valedictorian of her high school class and graduated from Mary Washington College at age 19. On September 7, 1946, she married Jack Stingley at her father's parsonage in Port Republic, VA. They returned to Center Junction where they farmed until Jack's death on February 9, 1973. On June 16, 1979, Dorothy married William 'Bud' Sandlin in Maquoketa and they made their home there. She continued to work as a bookkeeper and receptionist for Dr. Senft in Monticello, IA. Bud died in March of 1993 Dorothy was an active homemaker, who enjoyed volunteering at her church, reading, playing bridge and golfing. She also enjoyed baking cherry pies, playing softball, traveling and she especially enjoyed spending time with her family. The family would like to express their appreciation to the wonderful caregivers at the Bickford Cottage and the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House. Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 4, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Center Junction. Burial will be at the Scotch Grove Presbyterian Cemetery in rural Scotch Grove, IA. Memorials may be directed Alzheimer's Foundation or to the 1st Presbyterian Church of Center Junction.
