Obituary of Richard Clement Olberding

Survivors include his wife, Alice, 5 step-children: Francis (Pam) Ries of Dubuque, Sharon (Bob) Demmer of Dundee, IA, Elaine (Carl) Burkle and Eldon (Patti) Ries both of Dyersville and Elmer (Carla) Ries of New Vienna, 22 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, 2 brothers: Gene (Darlene) and Jim (Katie) both of Dyersville, one sister, Grace (Don) Hermsen of Luxemburg, a sister-in-law, Shirley Olberding of Dyersville and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, George Olberding and 2 grandsons: Ryan Ries and Jeff Ries. Dick was born on October 23, 1929 in Dyersville, Iowa, the son of Andrew and Agnes (Kramer) Olberding. He married Alice Thole-Ries on August 19, 1967 in St. Boniface Church in New Vienna, Iowa. Dick farmed outside the Dyersville area until his retirement in 1985. He then worked for the Lantern Co. as a banking courier and most recently for Birdnow Chevrolet delivering and detailing cars. Dick enjoyed golfing, mowing lawns, picnics, polka masses, card playing, family events and especially spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He continued his love of farming even after his retirement, helping his family during harvest. Dick joined the Knights of Columbus at the age of 18, and was currently a 4th degree Knight. Friends may call from 2 - 9 p.m. Friday, October 12, 2007, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville where a parish scripture service will be held at 4 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 13, 2007, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, in Dyersville, Iowa with burial in St. Boniface cemetery, New Vienna. Officiating will be Rev. Phil Kruse.
