Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, 2 daughters: Linda (Dean) Hemesath of Cedar Rapids, IA, Polly (Mike) Haight of Iowa City, IA, 3 sons: Steve (Susie) Meyer and Ken (Liz) Meyer both of New Vienna and Wayne (Jayne) Meyer of Dyersville, 21 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 2 brothers: Merlin (Kathy) Meyer of New Vienna and Leo (Ginger) Meyer of Dyersville, 2 sisters: Darlene (Frank) O'Connor and Mary Ann Heinrichs, both of Dyersville, 3 sister-in-law: Betty Wilgenbusch of New Vienna, , Catherine Wolf of Farley and Anita Wolf of Dubuque. He was preceded in death by his parents. Alvin was born on April 6, 1924 in New Vienna, Iowa, the son of Leo and Alvina (Bries) Meyer. He was inducted into the US Army on June 28, 1943 and served in 5 major campaigns including Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge during his 2 year tour. On May 29, 1954 he married Dorothy A. Wolf in Dyersville, Iowa. He was a mechanic at Hogan Motors and later at Tauke Motors in Dyersville for over 40 years until retiring in 1986. Some of his favorite pastimes were camping, fishing and playing cards. He was a member of the Edward W. Lake V.F.W. Post 7736 and the Scherrman-Peterson American Legion Post 656. Alvin L. "Mag" Meyer, 83, of Dyersville, Iowa died Friday, April 4, 2008 at University of Iowa Hospital & Clinics Iowa City, Iowa as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Friends may call from 3-9 p.m. Monday April 7, 2008, at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville where a parish scripture service will be held at 4 p.m. and a V.F.W./American Legion service will be held at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, in Dyersville, Iowa with burial in St. Boniface Cemetery, New Vienna, Iowa. Officiating will be Rev. Phil Kruse.
