Anna Mae Wernke, 74, of Holy Cross, Iowa died Friday, January 30, 2009, at Edgewood Convalescent Center in Edgewood, Iowa with family by her side after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Friends may call from 2 - 8 p.m. Monday, February 2, 2009, at Kramer Funeral Home in Holy Cross where a parish scripture service will be held at 3 p.m. and a parish rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. Visitation will also be held from 8 - 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009 at Kramer Funeral Home in Holy Cross. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., February 3, 2009, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Holy Cross, Iowa with burial in the church cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Raymond Burkle. . Anna Mae was born on May 23, 1934 in Petersburg, Nebraska the daughter of Albin B. and Anna (Recker) Pape. She married Roger Wernke on May 8, 1956, at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Edgewood, Iowa. Anna Mae worked at Community Savings Bank in Edgewood for the first 10 years of their marriage and later as a secretary/bookkeeper for the LaSalle School. She sold Avon for over 30 years. She also enjoyed kids and loved to volunteer for school functions. Anna Mae and her husband, Roger, helped many children as foster parents over the course of 12 years. She was a member of the Holy Cross Altar & Rosary Society and a past secretary for the parish council. She enjoyed listening to Danny O'Donnell, going to Branson, playing euchre and dominoes, spending time with her grandchildren and the many foster children whose lives she touched. Survivors include her husband, Roger, children: Alan (Dorene) Wernke of Hopkins, MN, and Annette (David) Hill of Hiawatha, IA, 5 grandchildren, Dana Wernke of Hopkins, MN, Ireland, Sierra, Sydney and Aspen Hill all of Hiawatha, IA, brother, John (Theresa) Pape of Edgewood, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albin and Anna Pape, and her 3 sisters Rosemary, Betty Jean, and Mary Jane Pape Memorials are preferred. The family would like to express sincere thanks to the dedicated caregivers at the Edgewood Convalescent Center, Above and Beyond Hospice, Dr. Carlisle and his staff at the Univ. of Iowa, and at Finley Hospital.
