Herbert was a proud and loving husband, dad, grandpa, and friend. He was the greatest teacher God could have given, teaching us what courage and true faith really are. He is survived by his children, Dale Burkle of Earlville, Bonnie Steffen of Luxemburg, Diann (Kevin) Carpenter of Earlville, Lavern (Carol) Burkle of New Vienna, Joyce (Dave) Loeffelholz of Dyersville, Sally (Ralph) Hinrichsen of Monticello, Sandra (Ron) Weber of Masonville, Roger (Nancy) Burkle of New Vienna, LuAnn (Ken) Weber of Winthrop, Linda (Dan Schrader) Burkle of Earlville, Vickie (Tym) Theisen of New Vienna, and Mary Ann (Charles) Willenbring of Webster City. His grandchildren, Kimberly & Jesse Steffen, Cory, Chris, & Kelli Carpenter, Amy & Jason Loeffelholz, Jacob & Joshua Hinrichsen, Carrie & Julitta Weber, Steven & David Theisen, and Tristan & Emma Willenbring. His sister & brothers, Alice Wulfekuhle, James (Delores), Clete (Grace), Leander (Lavonne), Delbert (Dorothy), and Donald (Lois) Burkle. Sister and brother in-laws, Florian & Darlene Goedken, Mary Ann Wichman, Viola Tschirgi, Rose Marie & Lynn Wolf, Joe & Paulette Goedken, and Mary & Earl McDermott.He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma, his parents, a son-in-law Ronald Steffen, brother-in-laws, Jerome Wulfekuhle, Karl Tschirgi, Joe Wichman, Lavern Goedken, a nephew Tim Burkle, and a niece Pamela Wolf. Hebert was born September 21, 1927, in Dyersville, son of Frank & Emma (Willenborg) Burkle. He received his education at the Olberding Country School. He married Wilma Goedken on January 25, 1954. She preceded him in death on May 14, 1995. He served in the Korean War. Herbert and Wilma were lifetime farmers in the Petersburg area until their retirement in 1987, when they moved to Dyersville. He was a member of the American Legion, SS Peter & Paul Church and Holy Name Society, and served on the Petersburg Parish Council, Petersburg Cemetery Board, and the Petersburg Centennial Committee. The family would like to give special thanks to Oakcrest Manor & Mercy Hospital in Dyersville and Hospice of Dubuque. Herbert Paul Burkle, 81, of Dyersville, formerly of Petersburg, passed away Saturday, February 14, 2009 at Oakcrest Manor in Dyersville surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Burkle's Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at Basilica of St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville with Father Phil Kruse officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Dyersville. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, February 17, 2009, at the Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville. Scripture service will be held at 2 p.m. and American Legion Post #137 of Dyersville will provide a 7 p.m. Military Honors Service
