Surviving are his wife, Rose, 4 children: Joyce (Mike) Kremer of Cascade, Tom Nehl of Monticello, Donna (Bill) Canovan of Janesville, Wis. and Linda (Steve) Werner of Dyersville; 7 grandchildren: Chad (Kerry) Kremer, Dan (Stacy) Kremer, Carissa (Brian) Gehl, Rachel Nehl, Charlie (Brandi) Nehl, Becky and Mandy Canovan; 3 great grandchildren and another expected in November; 6 siblings: Gerry Williams, Rita Doden, Isabel Lahr, Gilbert (Wanita) Nehl, Gene (Julie) Nehl and Joe (Connie) Nehl; brothers-and-sisters-in-law: Clarence (Adella) Lahr, Mary Jane Felton, Theresa Goedken and Alvin Lahr. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter-in-law, Michele Nehl, 2 brothers: John and Vernon; 1 sister, Joan Bockenstedt, 10 brothers-in-law and 7 sisters-in-law. Wally was born July 29, 1920, in Alta Vista, Iowa the son of Charles and Rose (Gilbert) Nehl. He married Rose Lahr on Sept. 26, 1946, in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sand Springs, Iowa. Together they farmed near Monticello until retiring in 1983. Wally loved farming, gardening and being outdoors. He was always very neighborly and truly enjoyed visiting with his family and friends, playing cards and helping out the neighbors. He also volunteered at Camp Courageous. Wallace C. "Wally" Nehl, 88, of Monticello, Iowa died Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at his residence surrounded by his family after a lengthy illness. Friends may call from 2 - 8 p.m. Sunday, July 12, 2009, at the Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello where a parish scripture service will be held at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 13, 2009, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Monticello with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. John Kremer will officiate. Memorials are preferred to Sacred Heart School, Camp Courageous of Iowa or Above and Beyond Hospice.
