Obituary of LaVern William Lake

Survivors include his son,Thomas (Nancy) of Thornton, CO, one grandson, Nick Lake of Ft. Collins, CO, a step-granddaughter, Amanda Neice of Everett, WA, his former wife, Doris Lake, of Dyersville, nieces & nephews: Eugene (Becky) Lake, Ronald Lake and Randy Lake, brothers-in-law: Virgil (Mary Ann) Hermsen, Daniel (Jean) Hermsen and Fred (Barb) Hermsen. He was preceded in death by parents, and one brother & his wife, Milton (Agatha) Lake, and a niece, Shirley Klein. Doc was born on July 4, 1934 in Holy Cross, Iowa, the son of Alfred and Mathilda (Schieltz) Lake. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1952 serving in Korea. Doc earned the Korean Service Medal and Combat Action Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, Navy Commendation Ribbon and the United Nations Service Medal while in the service until his discharge on July 4, 1955. He married Doris T. Hermsen on July 20, 1955, in New Vienna, Ia. They later divorced. Friends may gather at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville, Iowa where funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at St. Francis cemetery where military rites will be accorded by Edward W. Lake VFW Post 7736 and American Legion Post 137. Officiating will be Rev. Al Vorwald.
