Albert was born January 26, 1928, in Farley, Iowa the son of Bernard and Agatha (Oberbroeckling) Engelken. Their family moved to Greeley, Iowa while Albert was in high school. He served in the US Army from 1946 - 1948. Albert and Inez Wegmann were united in marriage on October 10, 1951, in Greeley, Iowa. Together they moved to Dubuque where he was initially engaged in farming. In 1960, Albert began working for J.C. Penney Company in Dubuque and moved to Dyersville. After 26 years he retired from J.C. Penney and began volunteering in community organizations such as the Dyersville Area Historical Society and the Garden Club. Albert and Inez wintered in Texas for the last 10 years. Surviving are his wife, Inez, 4 children: Mike (Cora) of Sterling, VA, Barb (Don) Doudna of Cedar Rapids, IA, Tom of Allen, TX and Jim (Julie) of Durango, CO; 8 grandchildren: Andrew (Michelle), Kevin and Emily Engelken, Mari (Tim) Lewis, Matt and Bart Doudna, and Jared and Jenna Engelken; a brother, Joe (Viola) Engelken of Manchester, IA and a sister-in-law, Karen Engelken of Wauwatosa, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-law, Joe and Henrietta Wegmann, 3 brothers: Lawrence, Clarence (Eileen), and Don Engelken, a sister, Mary Ann Ambrose) Mensen. Memorials are preferred to St. Jude's Children, Research Hospital, 800-805-5856, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Sunday, February 21, 2010, at the Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville where a parish scripture service will be held at 4 p.m. and an American Legion Service will be held at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 22, 2010, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Phil Kruse will officiate and Rev. Thomas McAndrew will concelebrate. Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post 137.
