Kenneth Lester Moss, 88, of Dyersville, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at UnityPoint Health-St. Lukes Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. 

Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 17, 2023, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville, Iowa. Military honors will follow the mass outside of church.  Inurnment will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City at a later date.

A celebration of life will be held following the mass at the Dyersville Social Center, 625 3^rd Ave SE, Dyersville, Iowa 52040, from 1 – 5 p.m., on Friday, for food and continued memories of Kenneth.

Ken was born October 27, 1935, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Lester and Ann Moss.  He attended Holy Family High School, graduating in 1953.  He married Mary Jane Moss (Fitzgerald) on September 6, 1958, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City.  Ken graduated from St. John’s University in 1957 and received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Iowa in 1960.  He moved to Dyersville with Mary Jane in June of 1961 and opened a law office as a solo practitioner.  He practiced law in Dyersville for the next 58 years, retiring in 2019.  Ken was an active member of the community, having served on the Board of Trustees at Mercy Hospital as well as being a long-time member of the Lion’s Club and serving on various committees.   He was a voracious reader of history and encouraged all around him to pick up a book on any subject that interested them.  He loved sports and enjoyed playing basketball, golf and biking, even completing seven days of RAGRAI at the age of 65.  He also had a passion for all kinds of music and reveled in playing the trumpet and holding family jam sessions with his children and grandchildren.  Ken was a dedicated and loving husband, father and grandfather and was adored by his 8 grandchildren.  He was never afraid of laughing at himself and his only goal was to make others around him feel comfortable and loved.  He was kind-hearted and funny and he loved family gatherings with a household full of people where he could be the life of the party.

Survivors include four children: Diane Marie Moss of Dyersville, Patricia Lynn Moss (Jeff Johnson) of Crystal MN, Susan Michelle (William) Sharp of Des Moines, Brian Kenneth (Heather) Moss of Apple Valley, MN; grandchildren: Briana Marie Moss (friend, Steven Louis Meier), Jesse Tyler Sharp, Jade Alexandra Sharp, Nickolas Kenneth Lenane, Andrew Patrick Lenane, Soren Lee Moss-Johnson, Sophia Grace Moss and Isabella Rose Moss; two brothers:  John Moss and Gerry Moss, and four sisters: Dixie Shimak, Marilyn Moss-Taylor, Patricia Moss-Farnan, and Kathy (Dan) Moorhead, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Jane, a daughter, Colleen Kay Lenane (formerly married to Patrick Lenane), a sister, Linda Moss among other beloved family members.
