What a beautiful soul. I had the privilege of knowing him at a very early age. He was always filled with joy and love. My deep sympathy to those who knew and loved him.

I have hunted and fished with Tom several times.
He was a fantastic fisherman. I once saw him catch a trout in an area other people had tried and given up on. I asked how he did that and he said you have to think like a fish.
He loved hunting white tailed deer, especially the big bucks. In my experiences, I felt Tom was the best deer hunter I have ever seen. He liked to muzzle load when there was fresh snow on the ground. He would find a deer track in the snow and follow it hoping to find a deer bedded. As any hunter knows, this takes great patience and woods sense.
He was pretty good at turkey hunting too. In one hunt, he said he called a gobbler in to 60 yards, but couldn't get him any closer. So, he thought to himself this turkey has been around the block and is not going to fall for the usual repertoire of turkey calls. He wondered what has this turkey not heard that often, but is a turkey sound. Tom did a lost call and the gobbler came in.
Tom often wrote about his hunts. An outdoor magazine was asking for hunter's stories. Tom sent in several of his stories and the magazine returned them saying "we aren't accepting fiction". Kind of sums it up doesn't it?

This is an addendum to my previous tribute.
First, some clarification of previous stories.
On one birthday, Dan and I received CO2 powered BB guns from my Dad. We became bored with shooting targets and cans and patrolled Kittty Creek looking for something to shoot at and noticed a huge population of frogs. We shot several of the frogs. Tom always chuckled when we reminded him of the frog massacre. The frogs never returned to Kitty Creek in all the years I lived there. Another time, Tom showed Dan and I how to put chickens to sleep by gently putting their heads under their wings and rocking them in big circles. We put the whole hen house to sleep. Tom's dad George discovered this when he went out to put the chickens in for the night. He was not pleased. Tom said he always had to take the heat for mischief we all took part in.
Finally, Dan and I built a wooden kayak. Tom, Dan, and I decided to float it down a flood swollen Kitty Creek. We came around a corner and were greeted by a log jam. Dan was sucked under immediately and swam under the log jam to downstream. I was sucked under and foolishly tried to break through the log jam. Tom managed to get out of the current
and tried to pull me out too. He said that to this day he could mentally hear my shirt ripping as he attempted to pull me out. The amazing thing is we all surfaced yelling for the other two worried they didn't make it.. That is brotherhood (or cousinhood for you). Briefly, Tom was afraid he was going to have to tell my Dad that Dan and Dave did not make it.

These are many of Dave Bohlken's memories of cousin Tom.
When my mom decided that I and twin brother Dan were old enough to have a friend spend the night, we always chose Tom. Our get togethers included , the massacre of frogs in Kitty Creek, putting chickens to sleep, building hay bale forts, shooting pigeons. At an older age, we had many floats down the Maquoketa River.
I next spent a good amount of time with Tom as a room mate while going to the University of Iowa.
Our paths crossed less in the following years.
In the mid to late 1970s I became interested in winter camping. I spent several weekends staying in Hank Jacob's and Steve Nagel's cabins. These trips included trekking to Tom's on Saturday to watch the Iowa basketball team play.
In early 1982 Tom said let me show you where I want to build a cabin. He had picked a spot on his 100+ acres. and thought the many smaller white oaks in the area would make good logs for a log cabin. He got seriously hurt (leg) later that spring and I decided to build the cabin with myself and work buddies from Iowa City (where I now worked). I thought if nothing else, it would give me the opportunity to spend more time with Tom. Tom helped as much as he could. He and Mike planed the oak planks which became the floor and gables. Everything else was done by me and whoever I could recruit from Iowa City. Over the years the cabin has been enjoyed by myself, my friends, my kids (Matt and Cait), their friends and anyone I could talk into cabin camping. Most importantly, Tom enjoyed it. It was good to visit him the weekends we were at the cabin.

Goodbye to my cousin, hunting partner, and best of friends.
I wrote you a letter last April detailing my hunting memories, many of which involved you. I wrote:
" I am sure there are an amazing number of beautiful things we have had the privilege to see or experience because we are hunters. One time, we were starting out muzzleloader deer hunting at your place. You remarked on how beautiful everything was draped in fresh snow. I had been concentrating so much thinking about hunting deer that I didn’t really “see” what I was looking at. It took you to remind me of what a beautiful day it was. I always try to remember that. Thank you. "
And thank you again Tom for many wonderful memories old friend. Now you will hear "Well done, thy good and faithful servant." Goodbye. I will see you later.
