Kay Hermsen Holtz posted a condolence

Fred's family farm was across the road and a field or two further South from where I grew up. To say he enjoyed baseball is putting it mildly. My Dad, Leonard Hermsen, played first base for the Petersburg Pirates, during Fred's pitching years. Dad had the utmost respect for Fred. Our family made few "Sunday plans" because it was "baseball day" for my father and his cronies. If they played in Petersburg, after the game, win or lose, they bought a case of beer from the "tavern" and all gathered in the shade of the big tree outside the tavern. (And it was illegal to purchase beer in Delaware County on Sundays at that time, but I regress.) For many of the team, it was the only beer of the week, but they had to relive the game for one more hour. We kids hovered around absorbing their love of the game. Many years later, Fred's son, Kevin married my niece, Lisa Steger - and at the wedding, Fred said to me "Wouldn't your Dad be happy about this day?" and he definitely would have been so proud. He was smiling down from above, and yes, he would definitely have been happy to see his granddaughter married to one of Fred's sons.
My deepest sympathy to all of Fred's family, especially Kevin and Lisa. He was a special person.

Q: How did you meet Fred?
A: After the accidental death of my father in 1955 when I was 9, my mom married
Fred’s brother Ralph in 1959! Before moving to Texas, we made many trips to the farm and many more trips throughout my 64 years since then! I have had my kids and grandkids to the farms! Fred, Elaine and kids always welcomed us to the farm and as part of the family! I thank Fred for all the love shown to my family! He will be missed! RIP Fred! See you later!
