I think many of us have so many special memories that we could share. On my drive back, talking to my siblings and some of you I think we can all agree that our grandma was easily the best cook, gardener, and quilter.
I mean come on, who else can cook only measuring by taste, has more flour, chocolate chips, butter, and sugar than the grocery store, remembers every single person in the families favorite treat, makes a feast but “it’s not much” and did dishes with water so hot no one but her could use it, she always had laffy taffy’s and insisted on every joke be read, she had two deep freezers because one wasn’t enough, had push ups and golden nugget bars and never let you leave without something out of the freezer- because calories don’t count and the diet can always start tomorrow.
She made 18 double wedding quilts and 100s of others. You need a piece of fabric, she has it in her closet or dresser. The best was asking what quilt she was working on, going into the basement to check the one she had framed but also all the pieces she had upstairs for her next one.
She had a garden filled with tomatoes, kobanobbies, carrots potatoes and more. She had a laugh that you could hear from a mile away.
And now, now we take those memories with us to pass on for generations to come. I know she’s smiling at all of us and reminding us that what she did “wasn’t much.”
She was the strongest lady, never complained, asked for help, and would rather take care of everyone else.
She was one of my absolute favorites humans who always said to come back and visit and no visit was long enough, but I think my time wasn’t long enough with her. I think it’s important to smile as we think of the mark she left on us.
