I had the wonderful pleasure of being an undergraduate advisee of Dr. Schemmel. I was new to the world of Nutrition and she truly made it come to life. Shortly after Rachel began mentoring me, my parents and I had the chance to attend a scholarship event at MSU. My mother loved to ask the diverse group "Where are you from" each time she met someone new. When she met Rachel and learned she was from Farley, IA, my mother was astonished as she grew up very close by in Dyersville. They even learned that they shared a common relative, Martha Melchert. This tie has kept us connected for the last 25+ years. My mother and I loved to meet Rachel in East Lansing for a meal and loved hearing her stories old and new. Rachel was instrumental in my education at MSU and my professional career and personal life after. I was so blessed to have her in my life and she will be missed.
