Larry, was an amazing colleague he always knew how to bring a smile to all that he met. I was blessed to work with Larry for all the years he spent at NICC. An amazing human, how left us to soon. His NICC family will miss him and honor him forever.
Hugs to all

I was blessed to be able to hike with Larry on multiple occasions at various National Parks. I always enjoyed his humor and puzzling riddles. He will be missed greatly. I am honored to have been allowed to refer to Larry as “Unc”. I am sorry that I will not be able to attend his service but I would like to share some memories in photos. Including the iconic - “Unc in the Trunk” photo that will forever lighten our hearts.

Larry was our middle school teacher at RHCL. He was a very passionate teacher and has left a life long impression for those fortunate to have had him for a teacher. Brian and Deb Vorwald

I spent about six years working with Larry in the Peosta campus writing center. Larry was always very encouraging to NICC students. Many times I observed him help a shy or uncertain student gain confidence in their writing. He pioneered the annual NICC writing contest and later served as a contest judge after his retirement. Beanbags and Scrabble were a few of his past times. I caught a few photos of him playing beanbags with the President of the College.

Thank you Larry for all you did for the Lantern Center. You helped so many students. But you also brightened the day of the volunteers. It was so nice to talk with you during Tea Times on Fridays. Thanks for always making me chuckle. It felt as though you were a permanent fixture at the Lantern Center. Thank you so much for supporting me in my hockey endeavors as well. Your generosity, humor, and kindness will be sorely missed. Rest in Peace Larry.

I learned how to play a mean game of bean bags from Larry Kruse, because he was the one arranging our annual bean bag competitions at NICC. He was so kind and thoughtful and I know students who have worked with him in the past will be sad to hear of his passing. I know staff and faculty are as well. Many blessings to his family.

Larry... thank you for your teachings, they have served me in my daily life. You always had patience for me with my little knowledge of English, and with your wisdom you made me work hard and speak it in a short time.
You made the classes entertaining and fun to learn.
You'll always live in my heart my dear Friend.
My condolences from Reynosa, México.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees at the Presentation Lantern Center I can say that we are all saddened by the loss of our friend and role model, Larry. He was certainly the most devoted tutor, serious educator and bright light in a world full of darkness. His devotion to all the students at the Lantern Center, not only those to whom he was assigned, was infectious. Not only would he stop at the center daily to tutor or prepare for a future tutoring session but often he would volunteer to substitute for another tutor who had a lot minute conflict. He helped me and many other tutors with specific advice on how we could help our one-on-one English or Citizenship student and as a vital member of our Education Committee he helped improve the overall quality of the education program at the center. He will be missed but not forgotten as a friend, advocate for the poor and disenfranchised and mentor for all who are trying to make this a better world.

Feel very blessed to have had a wonderful teacher like him in middle school. He made it fun because you knew he loved what he was doing. Takes a special person to do that age group! Will never forget the records and songs he played for us as well . Didn’t take to much twisting for some Simon and Garfunkel. Keeping his family and all his friends in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Gone to soon.

I am grieving, as is the entire NICC community of faculty and staff. Larry touched so many of our lives in such a positive way. He was generous with his time, so very patient and supportive of students, a true friend, and one heck-of-a bean bag player. His humor touched us all. The science faculty, in particular, will miss his presence at gatherings outside of school - where he always had interesting insights to add to the conversation. We will miss you, Larry.

Larry "the commissioner" was a beloved friend and mentor, to all of us at the Lantern Center. His students adored him, and have shared that he was a motivation to do a return visit to the U.S. Whatever they wanted to learn about, he wanted to teach them about. His kindness, patience, love, supporting encouragement, and humor enriched so many lives. It has been an honor to call him a friend. To his family, we are praying for you. Thank you for sharing your cousin, brother, uncle, and friend with us. He loved you dearly.

Larry had the kindest heart and the keenest, gentle wit. Day after day, I saw him carefully prepare English lesson plans, pay attention to the little things, tell the best jokes and build caring relationships with those around him. He will be deeply missed. “Silla” on the other side, Larry!
