Obituary of Roy Kern
DYERSVILLE, IOWA
LeRoy C. Kern, 87, of Dyersville, Iowa passed away Sunday, February 10, 2019, at Mercy One Medical Center in Dubuque after a brief illness.
Visitation will be held from 3 – 7 pm Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2019, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Ave SW in Dyersville where a parish vigil service will be held at 3:30 pm, a Knights of Columbus Rosary will be held at 5:30 pm, and an American Legion service will be held at 7. Visitation will continue Wednesday from 9 – 10 am at Kramer Funeral Home prior to funeral services.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 13, 2019, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville with burial in the church cemetery where American Legion Post will accord military honors. Rev. Dennis Quint will officiate.
LeRoy was born October 25, 1931, in Dyersville, Iowa the son of Ben and Barbara (Ploesl) Kern. He graduated from Xavier High School with the Class of 1949, and served in the Army. He married Mary Ann Russ on February 13, 1957, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sand Springs. He began working with his father at Kern Locker, a business he eventually purchased and operated until selling it on January 1, 1980. After retiring from the Locker, he purchased hogs for NFO for a few years and then started a Spring Green franchise in Dyersville.
LeRoy was a member of American Legion Post 137 and the Knights of Columbus Council 1734
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann, 2 children, Bernie and Carol Kern, both of Dyersville, and a brother-in-law, Tony (Alice) Russ of Hopkinton, and a sister-in-law, Rita Russ of Monticello.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother-in-law, Nick Russ.
