Obituary of Eileen Clara Hermsen
Eileen C. Hermsen, 82, of Edgewood, formerly of Luxemburg, passed away Friday, December 21, 2018 at Lincolnwood Assisted Living in Edgewood surrounded by her family.
Visitation will held from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, December 28, 2018, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Ave SW in Dyersville where a parish vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Saturday, December 29, from 8:45 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at St. Mark’s Catholic Church prior to funeral services.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 29, 2018, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Edgewood, with a prayer service at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church prior to burial at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Colesburg. Rev. John Haugen will officiate with Rev Richard Gaul concelebrating.
Eileen was born March 12, 1936 the daughter of Alphonse and Regina (Fangmann) Gaul. She married Richard B. Hermsen on August 24, 1957 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Luxemburg. They farmed in the Dyersville area until they purchased their farm south of Colesburg in 1963. They retired in 1989 and moved to Luxemburg, until recently moving to Edgewood. Eileen enjoyed traveling with Richard, quilting, spending time with family, and cooking her family’s favorites. Eileen volunteered much of her time to the James Kennedy Public Library, Dyer-Botsford Doll House, and Heritage House in New Vienna. She loved her time spent doing “grandma duties”.
Survivors include her husband Richard, children: Cindy (Randy) Vorwald of Edgewood, Doug (Theresa Burns) Hermsen of Colesburg, Tammy (Kenny) Sperfslage of Edgewood, Jeff (Patty VanMeter) Hermsen of Manchester, Tim (Kris) Hermsen of Iowa Falls, Kurt (Janet) Hermsen of Madison, WI, grandchildren: Jill Sampson, Wendy Goldsmith and Justin Vorwald, Jason, Kyle, Cory Sperfslage and Lindsay Weber, Mike and Ryan Hermsen, Kelsey Shortley, Travis and Tyler Hermsen, Sophie and Sam Hermsen, 12 Great-Grandchildren, siblings: Marvin Gaul of Holy Cross, Gerald (Joan) Gaul of Farley, Virgil (Helen) Gaul of Dubuque, in-laws: Delores Gaul of Epworth, Diane Hermsen of New Vienna, Roger (Grace) Hermsen of Manchester, Bernice Vorwald of New Vienna, Gladys (Harry) Burkle, of Dyersville, Elizabeth Deutmeyer of Petersburg and Arthur Hermsen of New Vienna.
She was preceded in death by her parents, parents-in-law, Gregor and Anna Hermsen, her son, Russell Hermsen, granddaughter, Nicole Sperfslage, siblings: Eldon and Helen Gaul, Lawrence Gaul, Laura and Ralph Meyer, Leander Gaul in infancy, in-laws: Germaine Gaul, Ken Vorwald, Tom Deutmeyer, Harold Hermsen and Joyce Hermsen.
