Obituary of Melvin Cletus Langel
Melvin C. Langel, 85, of Dyersville passed away Monday, June 11, 2018, at Mercy Medical Center in Dyersville.
Visitation will be held from 3 – 8 pm Friday, June 15, 2018, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Ave SW in Dyersville, where an American Legion service will be held at 7 pm. Visitation will continue Saturday, June 16 from 8:30 – 9:30 at Kramer Funeral Home prior to funeral services.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 16, 2018, St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Dennis Quint will officiate and American Legion Post 137 will accord military honors.
Mel was born September 19, 1932, in Luxemburg, Iowa the son of Clem and Leocadia (Thillen) Langel. He graduated from St. Boniface High School and Bayless Business College, and then entered the US Army and served in the finance department from 1953 – 1955 in Alaska. He married Doris Krapfl on June 29, 1957, in New Vienna, Iowa. Mel was employed as a service manager at various auto dealerships for forty years until his retirement. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Basilica, American Legion Post 137 and the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Douborg Assembly and Council 1734.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 61 years, Doris, 6 children: Ann Langel, Sharon Langel and Susan (Len) Uhal, all of Dubuque and Laurie (Jim) Hughes of Davenport, Mary Campbell of Dyersville and Joseph (Cheryl) Langel of Lakeville, MN; 11 grandchildren: Dr. Thomas (Kate), David (Leah) and Meghan Campbell, John (Patti), Katie and Joe Uhal, Benjamin and Abigail Langel, Michael, Elizabeth and Thomas Hughes; 3 great grandchildren: Samuel Campbell-Wise, Angela and Michael Uhal, a sister, Germaine Ungs of Luxemburg, and in-laws: Dorothy Langel of Luxemburg, Lester Dingbaum of Manchester, Gene (Betty) Krapfl, Alice Langel, Donna (Jim) Kluesner, Inez (Bernard) Kluesner, Marian Hermsen, Irv Borgerding, David (LuAnn) Krapfl.
He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings: Elmer (Mary) Langel, Sally (Alvin) Wegmann, Lavern Langel and Virgie Dingbaum; and in-laws, Art Ungs, Francis Langel and Joyce Borgerding.
Memorials are preferred to St. Francis Xavier Basilica or Beckman Catholic High School.
