Obituary of Stephen John Fitzgerald
DYERSVILLE, IOWA
Stephen J. Fitzgerald, 69, of Dyersville passed away Monday, March 26, 2018, at his home surrounded by his family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 28, 2018 at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, Iowa.
Steve was born the son of Donald “John” and Virgene (Wessels) Fitzgerald on January 3, 1949, in Dubuque, Iowa. He served in the National Guard for six years after graduating from Beckman High School with the Class of 1967. He married Mary Wolfe on April 18, 1970, at St. Columbkilles Catholic Church in Dubuque. Steve worked at the Dubuque Packing House for 15 years and then began OTR Trucking for 28 years with John Winders Trucking. During this time he received an award for having no accidents in over one million miles, until retiring in 2009. He enjoyed following his grandson, Ethan, playing baseball and football. He also loved playing cards, golfing, his dogs and animals of all kind, spending time with his family and friends, and he was an avid Cubs and Hawkeye fan.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 48 years, Mary; 2 children: Tammy (Laurie Gruneich) Fitzgerald and Jon (Courtney) Fitzgerald, both of Bella Vista, AR; 1 grandson, Ethan Fitzgerald; siblings: Tim (Janet) Fitzgerald, Tom (Linda) Fitzgerald, all of Dyersville; a brother-in-law, Pat “George” Graham of Dubuque, as well as many other in-laws, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Sarah Graham.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque or the Dubuque Humane Society.
