Obituary of Leon Edward Wessels
Leon Wessels, 90, of Dyersville, died peacefully, Tuesday, November 14, 2017, at his home from acute leukemia.
Visitation will be held from 2-7 pm Sunday, November 19, 2017, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Ave SW in Dyersville where a parish vigil service will be held at 6:30 pm. Visitation will continue Monday, November 20th from 9-10 am at Kramer Funeral Home prior to funeral services.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Monday, November 20, 2017, St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Dennis Quint will officiate and American Legion Post 137 will accord military honors.
Leon was born June 4, 1927, in New Vienna, Iowa the son of William and Mary B. (Oberbroeckling) Wessels. He served in the Army from 1945-47 in South Korea. He married Eileen Roling on October 6, 1947 at St. Francis Xavier Basilica. Leon and Eileen owned and operated Wessels Produce in Dyersville until retirement in 1989. He enjoyed boating and fishing, golf, bowling, traveling and woodworking.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Eileen, children: David (Karen) of Rockford, Ill., Donna (Bob) Kaukaskie of Dubuque, Iowa, Richard (Dawn) Wessels of Scandia, Minn., and Jane (Dean) Knipper of Earlville; a daughter-in-law, Deb Wessels of Iowa City, Iowa; grandchildren: Vic (Allison) Wessels, Emmanuele (Mark) Martinez, Kristina Kaukaskie, Jason (Lacy), Mitch (Trisha) and Brandon (Brittany) Knipper and Kim (Zach) Wills; 10 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Ruth Wessels and Kay Wessels, both of New Vienna, Elaine Roling of Dubuque, Iowa and Lorraine Gravel of Dyersville, Iowa
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Kenneth; siblings: Earl Wessels, James (Lillian) Wessels, Louis Wessels and Fred (Mary Ann) Wessels, numerous in-laws from the Roling family.
Memorials are preferred.
