It's been nearly 30 years since graduating from Cascade High School and I was having a conversation with my sister this morning and we were discussing the old adage, "you get what you pay for" and I told my sister that I learned this lesson early on from
Mr. Bauer in high school. Mr. Bauer would share this credo frequently with our class and use examples that would make you appreciate that you should always choose the best option within your means. Whether it was a pair of shoes or a new car, he would say, "why not have something that will last?" I have a feeling this is how he lived his life outside of the classroom as well.
Sadly, and with some coincidence, my sister informed me that Mr. Bauer had just passed a few days prior. Well, thirty years later and Mr. Bauer's lessons live on and I share them with the scholars I work with everyday at New York University. He was a good man. My thoughts are with your family during this sad time.
Warmly,
Daniel Holub

I was a student teacher in Bill's class in the fall of 2004, and so appreciated his warmth and wise counsel as I finished my college education. He made me feel at home in Cascade, and empowered me to lead a Speech group to the state competition.
I found myself wondering what Bill was up to these days, and was saddened to find that he passed 7 years ago. Hoping that his family continues to find strength and peace from the warm memories of a life of impact that was well-lived.

Madonna and family,
I'm sad to hear of Bill's passing. My heart aches for what you must be going through at this time. Although I didn't know Bill very well, I hear he was a great guy. I know my brother-in-law Jerry Roling found Bill to be a very dear friend. Madonna, I wouldn't have expected any less than "great" coming from your gentle guidance. God Bless you all during this very sad time.
Sincerest sympathies,

What a beautiful tribute to Bill! He touched many lives, and all of us fortunate to be among those he met are sorry to know that his light has left this world, but I am glad to know that his light is among old friends. He can hunt with his Dad, my dad Ding, and all the old Buenie gang once again. Fishing is abundant, trot lines are full, and boats never run out of gas. We will meet him again one day and our lights will join his.
My deepest sympathies to the entire Bauer family.

Robin, Dani and Rob,
I am Shannon's Mom and have kept up with Bill's journey through her. Basically that meant two things: I lifted Bill up in prayer numerous times, praying for healing or ease through the journey, and, talking to Shannon and Brad re. what a nice man Bill seemed to be. Clearly from the notes here in 'condolences' he was much loved and respected. I know that ya'll have a huge hole in your family. I am so sorry that Bill has died. We'll all understand it by and by. I continue to pray. God speed Bill Bauer.

My heart goes out to you Robin and the rest of the family. Mr. Bauer had a profound impact on me as a young man attending CHS. He had a unique way of challenging my mind, to dig deeper and find meaning in literature... making my world much more colorful today. He was an incredible Speech coach, and I greatly appreciated his support of the Drama program. I felt proud walking into his class after a production and seeing the names of the cast and crew on his board; his way of recognizing a job well done. I think what I will remember most, above all of the Classics we covered, was the positive way he made me feel as a student at CHS.
Thank you for the memories Mr. Bauer, and my deepest condolences to you, the family.

Dear Robin and family...I am so very sorry to have learned about Mr. Bauer. I met you Robin and Rob at Tim and Shelby's wedding two years ago. I am Shelby's aunt and had Mr. Bauer in school in 1976 in Cascade. When I talk to him at Tim and Shelby's wedding, we reminisced about the first school trip he had taken with our class up to Minneapolis. It was a wild bus trip and he remembered it. I had so much respect for him and was so glad that I had Mr, Power as a teacher in school. You have my deepest sympathy Joanie Barnard

Robin, Dani and Rob, my heart goes out to all of you. It was my pleasure to have Bill as a friend for over 43 years. He was one of the first people that I met when I arrived in Ballarat, Australia in 1972. He welcomed me with open arms and we became great friends and did many memorable things together. Our friendship endured over many years even though we lived a great distance apart. I feel so fortunate to have had Bill in my life and I will always cherish our many memories.
I deeply regret not being able to attend the services for him. We are on a long driving trip and I am not able to get back to Iowa in time. My best wishes to all of you. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I send my prayers to your family during this time of sorrow. Mr Bauer was a great teacher. I remember having to read Romeo and Juliet in his class. At that time in my life reading was not my cup of tea. He enjoyed the classic books and after he explained in English what the writer was saying Romeo and Juliet became one of my favorite books back then. Thanks to Mr Bauer I continue to go on adventures by reading. Thanks Mr Bauer. You have touched so many lives. He made a difference.

One of my favorite teachers ever! He and I could always relate when it came to music. He was a huge Jethro Tull fan and appreciated all kinds of music as well. Best of all, he gave me confidence at a time in my life when I truly needed it and he did so by simply pointing out the good things that people did. He taught me that a positive comment can go a long way. I am so sad to hear of this but I know I will see him again one day. Peace and comfort to his family.

I was sorry to read of Bills passing, he was my teacher in Cascade in the early 80's.
I was never a great student, (in high school) then one day we read Catcher in the Rye, I bashfully asked if I could take the book home for keeps, the next day he gave me the book. I still have that book, and treasure it dearly.
He marched to the beat of his own drummer, he is one of the few teachers who seen some potential in me.
My condolences to Bills family.

Please accept my most sincere condolences. I only just learned that Bill was sick. I am sorry that I was not able to share this with him directly.
Mr. Bauer was my english honors teacher twenty-five years ago. He facilitated some of the most important conversations/debates of my high school years. Because of him, I started reading the "classics" on my own and developed much better writing skills. I was a shy and insecure girl, he was very important in helping me develop confidence. It is impossible to overstate how important these things have been in my life. I went on to earn my PhD (in Biology) and am now an associate professor at the University of Nebraska-Kearney. I have published papers in scientific journals and now teach science students how to write. In fact, just two weeks ago I shared with one of these students some constructive criticism I received in his class.
Again, I am so very sorry for your loss. I hope there is some comfort in knowing that his work lives on in others.

I'm incredibly shocked and saddened to hear this news. Mr. Bauer (I could never call him Bill, even though he insisted I could after I graduated high school) was one of my favorite teachers and probably a big part of the reason I went on to get my English BA.
