WORTHINGTON, IOWA
Merrill “Bud” G. Smock 78, of Worthington, Iowa died Monday, July 6, 2015 at his home.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2015, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Ave SW in Dyersville where a parish vigil service will be held at 2:00 p.m. and American Legion Post 137 will gather at 7:00 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 9, 2015, at St. Paul Catholic Church, Worthington, Iowa with Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating and Rev. Dennis Quint concelebrating. Burial will be at St. Paul Catholic Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post #137.
Bud was born April 6, 1937 in Oneida, Iowa the son of Glennie and Alberta (Dettebarn) Smock. He married Darlene M. Burger on December 5, 1959 in Manchester, Iowa. She preceded him in death on February 22, 2015.
Bud loved his country and spent 22 years of his life serving in the United States Navy. During his military career he received the distinguished honor as Sailor Of The Year. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1978. He finished his working career as an electrician for the city of Dubuque and later Crecent Electric.
Those left to cherish Bud’s memory are his children: Gary (Judy) Smock of Cedar Rapids, Sharon (Dave) Walters of Eau Claire, WI, Teri Smock, Mary Smock and Larry (Mary Jo), all of Worthington, Geri (Jamie) Konrardy of Dyersville; grandchildren: Cari (Erik) Graham, Christopher (special friend Katie Kramer) Smock, Mackenzie Walters, Josh (Andi) Smock, Jessica Smock, and Ben, Alec and Elyse Konrardy; 4 great-grandchildren;
in-laws: Carl “Cub” Burger, Kaye (Eldon) Trumm, Dave “Crockett” (Linda) Burger, Wilma Wolfe, all of Worthington, IA, Marian Burger of New Vienna, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Richard, his parents-in-law, Raymond and Marcella (Drees) Burger;
siblings: Doryce Reid and Delores (George) Trogden
in laws: John Burger.
