Ambrose J. Merkes, 90, of Luxemburg, Iowa died Monday, November 17, 2014 at Dubuque Nursing & Rehab. Center, Dubuque, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 - 8 p.m. Thursday, November 20, 2014, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Ave SW in Dyersville where a parish vigil service will be held at 3 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 21, 2014, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Noah Diehm will officiate. Ambrose was born October 10, 1924 in Luxemburg, Iowa the son of Peter and Margaret (Ries) Merkes. He married Sylvia Vonderhaar on November 24, 1953 in Luxemburg, Iowa. Ambrose was a fun loving man. He worked at John Deere and enjoyed traveling, Polka and spending time with his entire family. Survivors include his sisters: Mary Jane (Merkes) (Joel) Glennon of Dubuque, Theresa (Merkes) Foxen of New Clarus, WI, brothers: Aloysius (Theresa) Merkes of Dubuque, Peter Merkes of Lancaster, WI, John (Lucille) Merkes of Dubuque, Arnold (Jacqueline) Merkes of Manchester and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Sylvia in 1999, sisters: Catherine (Joe) Foxen, Clara (Melvin) Weis, brother, Arthur Merkes and in-laws: Dorothy (Vonderhaar) Merkes, Leonard Foxen and Yvonne Merkes.
