Phil posted a condolence
Saturday, July 19, 2014
My dad always insisted that our farm was always neat, orderly, and kept-up. The same thing applied to his fields as well. Rows were always neat and straight whether it was corn, mowed hay, or even tilled fields.
One day, I was planting corn and my rows were becoming more and more curved as I moved across the field. He stopped me and said "Son, your problem is that you're always looking down right in front of you. You need to look up. Look across the field - towards the horizon. Pick out a tree, a fence post, or a telephone pole. Aim the tractor towards that, and your rows will be straight"
That advice not only helped me create straight rows, it's also metaphor for how he lived his life. He was always looking up, forward, and towards the future.
Now I'm not a farmer, but whenever I mow my grass on Saturday, I still use his advice and "look up". Instead of telephone poles, it's usually a bush or a potted plant - but I've got the straightest mow lines on the block. And I will always think of him.

My dad never asked for things, but he always provided. He seldom got angry, but we always wanted to please him. He never complained, but we knew it was hard. Words like "I love you", and "I'm proud of you" were hard for him to say. Yet we always felt his love and his pride. He was never selfish - he always gave to others.
He was my mentor, my hero. He taught me farming lessons and life lessons that made me the man I am today. Most importantly, he taught me how to be a father to my own children. Through his own actions, he showed me the values of hard work, compassion, and humor. These gifts he gave me will live on through me long after he is gone. Hopefully, I can pass these gifts along to my children, and their children, and through many generations to come.
I will miss you Dad.

Joe was the kindest of men. Some of my best memories from childhood were from when Phil invited me to stay over at their farm. Joe taught me how to milk cows and drive the tractor (I ran over the planted rows and probably ruined half the crop). Rest in peace Joe.

For this one farmer the worries are over, lie down and rest your head,
Your time has been and struggles enough, put the tractor in the shed.
Years were not easy, many downright hard, but your faith in God transcended,
Put away your tools and sleep in peace. The fences have all been mended.
You raised a fine family, worked the land well and always followed the Son,
Hang up your shovel inside of the barn; your work here on earth is done.
A faith few possess led your journey through life, often a jagged and stony way,
The sun is setting, the cattle are all bedded, and here now is the end of your day.
Your love of God's soil has passed on to your kin; the stories flow like fine wine,
Wash off your work boots in the puddle left by blessed rain one final time.
Your labor is done, your home now is heaven; no more must you wait,
Your legacy lives on, your love of the land, and we will close the gate.
Nancy Kraayenhof.

We have lots of memories of Dad listening to Paul Harvey from the AM radio of his pick-up truck. Here's one that comes pretty close to capturing Dads life.
"So God Made A Farmer"
And on the 8th day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, "I need a caretaker." So God made a farmer.
God said, "I need somebody willing to get up before dawn, milk cows, work all day in the fields, milk cows again, eat supper and then head off for a game of cards with neighbors." So God made a farmer.
"I need somebody with arms strong enough to rustle a calf and yet gentle enough to hold his own grandchild. Somebody to call hogs, tame machinery, come home hungry, have to wait for lunch until his wife's done visiting ladies and tell the ladies to be sure and come back real soon -- and mean it." So God made a farmer.
God said, "I need somebody willing to sit up all night with a newborn calf. And watch it die. Then dry his eyes and say, 'Maybe next year.' I need somebody who can shape an ax handle from a persimmon sprout, shoe a horse with a hunk of car tire, who can make harness out of haywire, feed sacks and shoe scraps. And who, planting time and harvest season, will finish his forty-hour week by Tuesday noon, then, painin' from 'tractor back,' put in another seventy-two hours." So God made a farmer.
God had to have somebody willing to ride the ruts at double speed to get the hay in ahead of the rain clouds and yet stop in mid-field and race to help when he sees the first smoke from a neighbor's place. So God made a farmer.
God said, "I need somebody strong enough to clear trees and heave bails, yet gentle enough to tame heifers and wean pigs and tend the pink-combed pullets, who will stop his mower for an hour to splint the broken leg of a meadow lark. It had to be somebody who'd plow deep and straight and not cut corners. Somebody to seed, weed, feed, breed and rake and disc and plow and plant and tie the fleece and strain the milk and replenish the self-feeder and finish a hard week's work with a five-mile drive to church.
"Somebody who'd bale a family together with the soft strong bonds of sharing, who would laugh and then sigh, and then reply, with smiling eyes, when his son says he wants to spend his life 'doing what dad does.'" So God made a farmer.
-Paul Harvey 1978
