I have volunteered with Max for many years at the EAA fly-in. His absence this July in Oshkosh will be greatly noticed. Max was a friend to every one there and it always amazed me that it seemed that there was no one in aviation that Max was not already friends with.

So sorry to hear for Max's passing. He was a great friend who I always enjoying seeing every year at Oshkosh. I also know he was a tireless promoter of EAA to people he encountered. He will be missed.

Carl graduated with Max. They were very good friends and classmates from elementary through high school.
We enjoyed talking with him at the reunions.. At one we told him that we had a large cow tank that we wanted to get rid of that we used for our daycare children to swim in...He said he needed one and came with his truck ... We helped him load it and he took it home.
Rest in peace, Max...see you in heaven.... You have our condolences.
With the Lord's blessing
Carl and Nancy Morning.

I have not lived in Monticello for many years. But, whenever I and my family came back to visit St. John's Lutheran, Max would always make it a point to strike up a conversation and see how we were doing. Max was a nice guy.

Growing up in the Scotch Grove area, everyone knew each other and we all were there for each other. It was amazing way to grow up. Max was always ready to talk and ask about how life was going. Though we didnt see him often, we will surely miss him! We're thinking about you and hope you find some peace and quiet comfort. Take care!

I first met Max eight years ago when I began working in the Monticello area. Max always treated me like we had been lifelong best friends. He always greeted me with a big smile would ask "what can I do for you?" I consider Max to be a dear friend and he will very much be missed.

For 23 years we have known Max's company at AirVenture in Oshkosh. The man that always welcomed us to camp, brought the EAA paper each morning and ensured our boys were taken care of every single day. Max always put others before himself, what a difference he made in our lives. We were fortunate to have been able to share so many aviation memories with a true and honorable man. Our heartfelt sympathies and thoughts and prayers for Max's family. He will always be in our hearts as we look towards the sky.

I became reacquainted with Max after my father, Chauncey Dirks, died in 1999. After that, I always considered Max as my adopted father.
I have great memories with Max whether it is riding on the tractor, feeding the cows, or having a nice meal together. The most important memories was just spending time together, and he will be greatly missed.
My best wishes to all the Dirks family. You are the best!

my best memories of Max are:
1. He knew and liked my Dad.
2. He put life size cardboard cutouts of Hayden Fry and John McCain in the old office of the Balster's Implement Store as detirents to crime. Then he move around periodically.

To Max's family: I was shocked to hear from my brother, Dave, of Max's death. We Balsters grew up surrounded by Max's (& his father's) farm land & pastures. And of course he bought the Balster main office and hardware in our auction in 2011. I last saw Max over 20 years ago, in '88, when I was home taking care of my mother, when she was ill with cancer; Max would stop by & say hello to her. I remember him talking about his kids then--he was so proud of them! What I most appreciated about Max was how he didn't develop the land around us in Scotch Grove, but rather kept it in a natural state....it was/is SO beautiful & pastoral, with his cattle grazing & the trees along the creek, the green hills. My sister, Susan, loved Max's land so much that she took photos of it at various times, when she was in Iowa working on Dad's estate, & sent me these pics. Max's attention to this land around Scotch Grove helped to make Scotch Grove beautiful, & I can only hope this might be continued. My deepest sympathies to your family at your husband/father/grandfather's untimely loss. Lynn Balster Liontos/Eugene, Oregon

I was shocked to hear of Max's passing. He was a great person that cared for God, family, friends and community. His example of life is one for all of us to strive for. I met Max through a good friend of mine, and He always made me and my family welcome. I can not thank God enough for knowing that great man. He will sorely be missed.

I first met Max many years ago as a young boy. He was a childhood friend of my Father's and a staple at the Monticello Municipal Airport. Over the years I had many opportunities to sit down and enjoy a good conversation (which always centered around either the family, flying, Osh Kosh or farming). Max was a passionate man, and one that cared deeply about good friendships. He was never without a great big smile on his face and an extended hand. I want to express my deepest condolences to the family. Max will be sadly missed by many, but always remembered.
