Louis L. Recker, 87, of 3129 Hillcrest Road, Dubuque, Iowa and formerly of Holy Cross, Iowa died Thursday, October 31, 2013, at Luther Manor in Dubuque.
Friends may call from 2 - 7 p.m. Sunday, November 3, 2013, at Kramer Funeral Home in Holy Cross where a vigil service will be held at 4:30 p.m. and the Edward W. Lake V.F.W. Post 7736 will conduct a service at 7:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 4, 2013, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Holy Cross with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Jose Comparan will officiate.
Louis was born November 27, 1925, the son of George and Ludwina (Burkle) Recker near Dyersville, Iowa. He proudly served his country in Korea being wounded in the Battle of Bloody Ridge in 1951. Louis married Mildred Gaul on September 8, 1952. Together, they farmed in the Epworth area until 1956, when they moved to a farm near Holy Cross. They retired from farming in 1998. In 2008, they moved to a Dubuque Retirement Community and later to Luther Manor. He was a member of the K of C Council 1734, the New Vienna V.F.W. Post 7736 and the Disabled American Veterans. Louis enjoyed the farm, his computer and spending time with his family.
Surviving are his wife, Mildred, 4 children: Janet (Gary) Severns of Chaska, MN, Jean (David) Lee of Lewisburg, TN, Daniel (friend Diane Koppes) of Holy Cross, IA, and Neal of San Diego, CA,
4 grandchildren: Ben (fiance Colleen Harris) and Sam Severns, Jennifer (fiance Manuel Salvoch) and Patrick Lee,
siblings: Esther Reichenauer of Monticello, Mary Jane Reichenauer and Velma (John) Krapfl both of Dyersville, Sister Margaret Ann Recker, OSF of Milwaukee, WI, Helen Hawker of Cedar Rapids, IA, Karol (Jim) Koch of Fairfax, Robert Recker of Marshalltown, George Jr. (Maureen) Recker of Epworth, Charles (Ann) Recker of Dyersville, and Donald (Joan) Recker of Nocogdoches, TX;
in-laws: Eileen (Ed) Prier of Dyersville, Leon (Jean) Gaul and Julia (Bill) Welter all of Dubuque and Sister Mary Ann Gaul, FSPA of LaCrosse, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents, mother & father-in-law, Joseph & Eleanor Gaul, siblings: Germaine (Al) Kelchen, David (in infancy), Ralph Recker,
in-laws: Pete and John Reichenauer, Duane Hawker, Alvin (Pearl) Gaul and Bernice (Vince) Maiers.
A Louis Recker Memorial has been established with the Holy Cross Church and Holy Cross Ambulance Service.
