Father Gaul, I just learned of your passing today. You were an amazing blessing to my family and to me personally. The memories I have are too many to include here, but I think of you often and tell stories of you often. You shaped my faith in God and I am blessed daily with His presence. Say hi to my Dad for me!

I have many fond memories of Father Gaul during his pastoral service here at Sacred Heart in Oelwein in the 1970s. He was very compassionate toward the elderly members of our Italian-American immigrant community. Accept my condolences and God bless Fr. Gaul.

Our Emmaus Pastorate has a Seven Sisters group who has been praying every day for the intentions Fr. Gaul gave us for the last year. He subbed in our pastorate often over the years and was pastor at some surrounding parishes in years past. He was always patient and kind and generous. It was a privilege to know him and pray for him!

Remembering wonderful moments when Father would stop by our farm to visit the family in Manchester and he and dad would tell stories of the fun times they had growing up as boys together. He was their to support our family through out our dad's final years with us and provided prayers and comfort to our mom and all of us when our father passed away. He will be missed and our thoughts and prayers are with his family. He has touched so many lives.

I offer my sympathy and prayers to the family and friends of Fr. Gaul. I am a Franciscan priest, born and raised in Garnavillo, IA. I helped Fr. Gaul with Masses at times in Garnavillo. Fr. Don Blaeser, OFM and I preached a parish mission when he was Pastor of Postville, Monona, and McGregor. He was a kind and attentive priest, caring for everyone. I am currently the chaplain at the motherhouse of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis, Springfield, IL. May God grant him eternal peace.

Father Gaul was a very caring person. He drove from Garnavillo to Iowa City to visit me when I was in the hospital when I had my ruptured brain aneurysm, which I appreciated very much. He was always thinking and praying for others. May he R.I.P.

Father and I had a standing bet. When the Dodgers played the Cubs, the person from the losing team had to say 10 Hail Mary’s for the winning person! Father Richard was a good soul, and was a member of everyone’s family.

I enjoyed Father Dick's friendly and steady presence whenever I came to Iowa to visit his sister, Sr. Kay. He was very devoted to his family and I know they, especially his mother, were comforted by his presence. Fellow Franciscans in Sr. Kay's community spoke highly of his pastoral leadership. I know he will be deeply missed.

One great man has left this world for a much greater reward. A man for all and one who deserves every good thing, Surely his life speaks so highly of a man with compassion and love and most of all one who endured suffering quietly and for many days. Alleluia, he is with our Lord.
In Christ Jesus,
